Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Scottish Death record 1844

The list of surgeons in the 1843-44 directory for Edinburgh has

James Marr MD, 6 Northumberland Street.

There are also Mayne, Menzies, Messer and Mure.

Yes!  I think this you may be correct, most of the entries where the word Dr is present the word class follows!  I know he was down on his luck so perhaps this was common place for these unfortunates!  I'll maybe need to go to the NLS and investigate more, will keep the thread updated!

Thanks everyone!  I have not managed to locate him on any census.  He was married to Elizabeth Tait and they had about 7 children.  I have tried to trace the children on census records and have managed to find a few.  Samuel was convicted in 1842 and was listed as a vagrant so it's possible he slipped through the enumerator's net on the 1841 census.  I think I may have found a couple of his daughters living in Institutions in Edinburgh but I'm only going on their age and place of birth.  No sign at all of his wife who I'm assuming died before Samuel's convictions due to the children living in institutions.  He was living in Linlithgow and all of his children were born there too.  The Prison record shows his place of birth as Ireland.  Thanks again. Annie

Thanks for tackling this one.  The record is an Old Parish Register. Death record.  I did think the word was class but didn't spot Dr.  I think he was a pauper and had several convictions so this may be something to do with the Poor House or prison Doctor!!!  There's so little info to go on.

Thanks again
Annie

Hi can anyone decipher the words after Samuel Middleton's age.  Many thanks.  The top of the particular column in question says Designation (address)  The area in Edinburgh.

Perhaps!  But his occupation throughout his life was a fish curer, but he may have taken other work to tide him over....

Hi Thanks so much for this.  The info I have is from poor relief, and probably from a third party!

Solved the mystery! It's a shortened version of Kilculmagrandal in Derry.  http://www.placenamesni.org/resultdetails.php?entry=886

Many thanks, so can I assume that Kincull is a shortened version of Kinculbrack.  Also do you know where I can find a map relating to this area.

I've attached a snapshot of the document (1831 Census return) showing that Kincull and Kilculmagrandal as the same place.
