Lancashire / Kings Arms Hotel, Prescot
« on: Wednesday 21 February 07 22:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I believe that my grandparents (in law) Harry & Mary Orton were landlords of the Kings Arms Hotel in Prescot from about 1925 to 1929.
I think that the Fusileer was built on the site in 1978. Does anyone have any old photographs of the Kings Arms Hotel or any ideas where I may obtain photographs?
Cheers,
Jacqui

Occupation Interests / Motor Layman
« on: Saturday 03 February 07 23:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Was wondering what a Motor Layman did. This was the occupation that my grandfather stated when he joined the RNAS as a mechanic in 1917. Was a Layman maybe another name for a mechanic?

Armed Forces / What is the difference between Discharge & Disembodied?
« on: Tuesday 30 January 07 22:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I have just received a copy of Medal Roll for 1914-1915 Star of my Grandfather (In Law) Walter John Howarth. It states that he was Disembodied on 27/02/1919.  Sounds a bit drastic! Others on the page are described as being Discharged.  What is the difference between being Disembodied & Discharged? He served with the10th Manchester Battalion.

Best Wishes, Jacqui

World War One / Help with photo-WW1-Training School, France
« on: Tuesday 02 January 07 23:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help with identifying what the initials mean on the "artist's board" in the attached photo.

I know that my grandfather (in law) Sergeant Walter John Howarth of the 1/10th Manchester Regiment (Marked X - no I am not guilty of that!) received a medal, engraved 4th Musketry School, France.

Could it possibly be a photo of that "Class". The photo has Carte Postale on the back so it was probably taken in France.

Also any information about his uniform eg Are they crossed rifles above his stripes? What does that mean?

Sorry the photo is in such poor condition but you don't know how many relatives I have had searching their attacks to come up with that one!

Cheers,

Jacqui

The Common Room / Born at Sea
« on: Wednesday 29 November 06 19:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone know if there are records of births at sea? (Probably between Ireland & England)

I am trying to find out details of the birth of Annie Bryson Kennedy. 1901 census states that she was born at sea (British Subject) LDS shows her as being born in Antrim, Ireland 9th April 1867.

Where would I obtain a copy of the birth certificate for Antrim 1867?

Hope someone can help.

US Lookup Requests / Naturalization/Passenger lists look-up
« on: Saturday 07 October 06 13:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find information on William Henry Orton (sometimes known as Harry) born 24/02/1885 in Salford, Lancs.  Apparently he emigrated to the USA sometime after 1903 and worked in Detroit for the Ford Motor Co.  He had returned to England by 1915. I am told that he had become a naturalized American during his time there.

There is an entry on ancestry for a Harry Willaim Orton under New York Petitions for Naturalization Record.  Also there are a couple of entries for William H Orton passenger lists for Boston.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Wexford / Pierce Family from Ennescorthy
« on: Saturday 22 October 05 23:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone advise the best way to trace the following family from Enniscorthy.

Francis Pierce b. abt. late 1790's Farmer, Roman Catholic
wife Ann ? b. abt 1796
daughter Sarah b. abt 1837
daughter Susan b. abt 1838, married name Conway

When did the register of births begin? If from 1837, where would I apply for a birth certificate search/copy?

Hope someone can help as I have only researched England & the Isle of Man so far.

Cheers, Jacqui
