Ireland / Irish research - where do I start? Patrick Leahy
« on: Tuesday 31 May 16 13:56 BST (UK)  »
Afternoon All,

I think that it's time I started on the Irish side of my family but don't really know where to start  ???

My grandad, Patrick Leahy, moved to England in approx 1945. I have found his birth record on familysearch and know that he was born in Loughrea, Ireland in 1930. His mothers maiden name was Rooney. This is all I know about him or his family in Ireland. My grandad passed away a few years ago.

Can anyone suggest where I would start? I am guessing maybe ordering a copy of his birth certificate? Does this work the same way as ordering a cert in E&W? I know that Leahy is a very common surname in Ireland so I'm fearing the worst.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

London and Middlesex / Trying to find the marriage of Thomas Challis and Emily Williams:
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 20:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am trying to find the marriage of a Thomas Challis and Emily Williams.

Thomas (my great grandfather x2) was originally married to Mary Lambden (20 May 1877). Thomas and Mary, both from Berkshire, moved to London and Mary died of TB in 1890. Thomas and Mary had five kids.

Here comes the fun part. Thomas is on the 1891 census as Thomas Williams. He is now with an Emily Williams and all of Thomas and Mary's kids. All kids births are registered as Challis but on census records as Williams. On the 91 census there is the addition of an Albert Williams, aged one. Albert died ages four and I have his death certificate. Full name was Albert Victor Challis Williams!

On the 1911 census, Thomas and Emily have put that they were married for 30 years. Of course it is possible that they never did marry, but I want to make sure :)

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Armed Forces / Help finding service record for Thomas Williams (Challis)
« on: Sunday 30 August 15 20:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am trying to find the service record for my great great uncle, Thomas Williams (could also be Challis).

I have Thomas's brothers service record, and it lists Thomas service no as 6386 but I can't find anything :( Thomas's brother was Henry George Williams (6804).

Thomas was born on the 10 Oct 1884 in Fulham, London. He was born as Challis but on the 91 and 01 census they used the name Williams.

Thank you in advance.

Dear All,

I am trying to find some more info on my great uncle William Thomas Challis who died in action 9 September 1943.

William T was part of The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regt) and his army number 14284261. I have found his army roll of honour where it states he was a Fusilier and the theatre of war was North Africa.

I have also found his death record on CWGC. He is buried in Salerno War Cemetery.

Any help or advice on how I can find more info on his army life etc would be much appreciated :D.

London and Middlesex / William John Cockram - London, St Pancras
« on: Friday 23 September 11 20:27 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

I am looking to try and get some more info on my great granddad William John Cockram.

I have his marriage cert. He married Dorothy Olympia Ryder in St Pancras 1932. On the marriage cert his father shows as being William (some middle name I can’t read) Cockram. On the marriage cert under his name it reads "William John Cockram otherwise Jenkins". I am guessing Jenkins would be his mothers maiden name? On free bmd there are a few Cockram’s mmn Jenkins born between 1910-20.  I am pretty sure I have William on the 1911 census, living in St Pancras with his father and mother (down as Louis?!). The parents have apparently been married for 10 years but i can’t find any marriage record.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated :D

Thanks
