Dear Nick
Found a birth of an Annie Boyes Selby 1st Q 1885.Found Annie age 6 in 1891 with father William born Hamstead Essex living near Woodlesford West Yorks , brewer's labourer, age 33 Mother Margaret age 30 born somewhere in Yorkshire.
In 1901 the same family living in Rothwell. William works for the railway but cannot read his exact occupation. Margaret cannot read her place of birth but somewhere in Yorks.
Annies older brother John W born Bubwith (north east of Selby c.1883, Annie Selby c1885, Elizabeth c 1883 Selby, Albert c 1892 Woodlesford, Ivy c 1895 Woodlesford, Arthur c1897 Woodlesford, May 1900 Rothwell.
As you could not find the birth of Annie up in Guisborough, this may well be the right family. Do any of the names tie int with names in later generations?
Hope this is of some help

Durham / Re: Irish in Co Durham
« on: Tuesday 25 November 08 19:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Lynn
I would imagine the vast majority came in through Liverpool and/or maybe Stranraer. I have a lot of relatives from Ireland who lived in Hull and I think they came in through Liverpool as they lived and got married in Ormskirk. Whatever, the mining in Co. Durham certainly gave them a livelihood, albeit very hard. In 1 census the McDonalds moved to the West Riding to work in the mills but later moved back to the mining in Winlaton/ Gateshead.
All the best

Dear all.
Many thanks for your suggestions re George McDonald and Mary Kelly. They were married c 1850 as their 2 daughters Mary and Margaret were born Birtley c 1852 and 1854. I have found the family in the 61, 71 and 81 censuses but not in 1851. I am assuming that they came over to Co. Durham post 1845-7 in the Potato Famine.

Re Irish marriages. I have searching for ages for a marriage in Co. Durham between George McDonald and Mary Kelly around 1850. George was from Mayo and Mary from Roscommon. They lived in mining communities eg Birtley, Winlaton. Have you any marriages, please in your lists that might fit?
Many thanks for your time

Henry Abbot christened Helmsley 22/06/1808 no father or mother mentioned
Age and place more or less fit in with subsequent censuses as Pockley is just 2 miles from Helmsley

Mary Ann Thompson (Mary Garbutt Thompson mentioned in the  previous post) married Henry Abbott (presumably takes on the surname Garbutt) 6th June 1831 Hawnby. This might tie the Abbott, Garbutt, Thompson names together that come in the next generation?Obviously we are still no further in understanding why the surnames appear and disappear but I do think these two Mary and Henry are the key.

Just to add a little more to the puzzle: have just found the birth of Mary Garbut Thompson 1811 Bilsdale Midcable - no father mentioned mother Elizabeth Thompson. Mary born 25/03 christened 2/04 1811.
The other place with loads of Abbots and Garbutts is the Rosedale indexes on Genuki

My GGGgrandmother was Rosannah Abbott born Hawnby illegitimate daughter of Hannah Abbott. I would like to recommend the Hawnby births and marrages available on GENUKI done by Justine Cornforth. You might be able to work out who is who from these as they are very comprehensive. Good luck.

Another thing to think about maybe is births and marriages in Bilsdale Midcable and/or Old Byland
