Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: 1851/1861 Lookup Please - Wigton & Carlisle SELBY

Hi Jacsel

afraid I don't have these guys on the part of the 1851 Carlisle I have but have you tried looking on

http://rolyg.members.beeb.net/CensusNames.htm

It's an almost complete 1851 name & place index for Cumberland and if you are still looking may help track them down to an area.  Then you could post back asking for a specific lookup or try the record office.

Cheers  Sue

Hi

just browsing through the boards as have part of the Carlisle 1851 and found your request.  If you are still looking try these links for the surname index:

http://homepages.tesco.net/~rolygrigg/
http://rolyg.members.beeb.net/index.htm

There is a Mary Ferguson age 17 on the 1851 living at 12 Waugh's Lane.  Do you have details of parents or an occupation / other details that could check it is the one you are looking for?

Hi Reb

I'm afraid I don't have the census but did you know there is a name and place index online at:

http://rolyg.members.beeb.net/CensusNames.htm

This shows an Ann age 42 in Carlisle Part 2.  But unfortunately not all of the Carlisle areas are listed.

The certificate should hopefully show an address and you can also check the place index to see if this street was within the same district which should narrow it down.

If you don't get any joy on the board (doesn't seem to be anyone with the 1851 for Carlisle doing lookups) you could always try Carlisle Record Office - if you have the exact details they sometimes only charge for the copying and not the full research fee.  Or the CFHS has paper copies (link from the site above).

Hope this helps

Sue

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Lookup - John & Rachel Walker
« on: Tuesday 22 March 05 21:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Peter

I'm afraid I don't have the details for Elizabeth.  I have some research done by a cousin of my mothers and she has given me details that she obtained from the 1851 & 1871 Census.  Except, some of her information has proven to be wrong, so I am trying to piece together what has been verified and what is what I call "leap of faith" stuff.  The recent application I made to the GRO for what I had hoped to be Elizabeth's certificate was returned as my reference checking didn't match the details!

What I do know is that the family were in Monks Coppenhall Wybunbury in 1847 as I have a birth certificate for their 3rd child.  And I also know that the family were in Carlisle by 1850/1 and I'm awaiting my copy of the transcript for that area that should show me them.  John was dead by 1857.

I didn't realise the 1841 didn't have a name index so I'll post back if I'm able to track Elizabeth down!

Thanks anyway

Sue

It's the 1871 Carlisle Census - RG10 / 5218 Folio 123 p 31 entry 196.

Household duty could be the right answer - my family were always good at making something sound more than it was......!

Would be grateful for any ideas at all as to what Jane Armstrong's job is on the attached.

If it helps I think the first letter is probably an H going by other writing on the return but am stumped on the rest!  Possibly Handloom something??

The other members of the family either worked in the cotton mill, railway or iron works and the other households on the return are a mixed bunch with nothing that looks similar.  On the 1881 Jane is listed as a dressmaker.

This family are just full of problems, dissapearing menfolk, disappearing altogether and now this!

Thanks in advance

Sue

If anyone has the above I'd be very grateful for a lookup on the following:

James King - abt 56
Susannah King - abt 67

plus any family / household.

I have them at Lowhouse, Troutbeck on the 1851.

Thanks

The Gazetteer & Directory of Cumberland 1847 and the Post Office Directory 1858 both list an Elizabeth Armstrong as a shopkeeper / grocer in St Cuthberts Lane, Carlisle.

Any chance someone with the 1851 &/or the 1841 could try and trace her and the household - she should definitely be on the 1851 given the above.  I need the info to either eliminate or confirm her!

Thanks very much

Sue
