The Common Room / WDYTYA - Sue Perkins
« on: Friday 27 May 22 15:10 BST (UK)  »
Watched the first episode of the new series last night - comedian Sue Perkins.

Quite intriguing!
Isle of Man got a mention - Sue's German/Lithuanian great grandfather was interned there.
Then there was the link to Lithuania - the same as her friend Mel Giedroyc.
What a coincidence :D

Anyhow, I enjoyed this episode.

The Stay Safe Board / Travel to Switzerland
« on: Wednesday 25 August 21 15:22 BST (UK)  »
Asking for a friend who wants to visit her son in Geneva.

As far as I can tell, from Swiss websites, UK/GB/England is classed as High-Risk - i.e. Swiss equivalent of a red-flag :o

Has anyone any experience of traveling into Switzerland, please?

Canada / Potential Living Person
« on: Monday 29 March 21 15:21 BST (UK)  »
I have a cousin (just the one) that my brothers and I have lost touch with.

CS was born in South Wales to William Sims and Dorothy Gane in 1946.
We last heard from her in 2008, at the time of my mother's funeral.

William & family emigrated to Vancouver; William died in 2008 in Burnaby, BC.
As far as we know his daughter remained in Vancouver.

Are there any resources I can use to see if she died? Or perhaps check if she still lives?

Australia / South Australia - Hangaratta?
« on: Wednesday 20 May 20 08:35 BST (UK)  »
The brother of my 2nd great grandfather was Henry Garrad, b 1831 in Colchester, Essex, England.

An English newspaper entry has his death at Hangaratta, SA on 29 Sept 1853.

I presume the placename has been mangled by the English newspaper, but does anyone have any clues as to what the place actually is?

The Essex Standard report says: September 29th 1853 at Hangaratta, South Australia, accidentally drowned crossing a creek, in the 23rd year of his age, Henry, the fourth son of Abraham Garrad, of Colchester
