World War One / Help with Royal Engineers Units [Edited]
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 17:25 BST (UK)  »
I'm wondering if anyone could help at all with establishing in which RE unit Henry Augustus Allen, born 1886 in Croydon, might have served during WW1.
He volunteered for the RE in Jan 1915 signing up as a sapper in Norwood, South London, for the duration of the war [Surrey Recruitment Registers]. He first entered a theatre of war [France] on 1 Sep 1915.
He received the Victory, War, and 1914-1915 Star Medals [rolls and medal cards available].
His service number was 63957.
I can find no service record for him and otherwise have no other details or clues about his service.

Am looking for the burials of spouses Henry Augustus and Emma ALLEN, presumably in Croydon.
Both were living at 4 Blake Road, Croydon at time of death.
Henry died 23 Jun 1937
Emma died 10 May 1938
All and any tips appreciated.

Dear Svenja and Carinthian Girl,

Thanks immensely for your replies. Locations have been a bit of a stumbling block for me but your answers are helping to clear away the fog of war.

First off, I see now that the image of the todtenschein (which I found in the Eupen archives) is available here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-32296-5042-9?cc=2138505&wc=M94F-M8F:1598576826 ... in case you're interested.

(1) Gaja /Gaya - based on previous research, I'm very certain that this is Kyjov. The regiment had its headquarters there, including in 1803. Based on the info available, it seems to me highly likely that Gaja is only the location where the administrative document was drawn up and not the burial location. I can't yet find a reason as to why the todtenschein was drawn up in 1803 (as opposed to any other time).

(2) Eupen - I've done lots of research in the Eupen archives. Branches of my family were in Eupen from at least 1750 till 1900. Parish records definitely show no burial for him in Eupen. A possible but uncertain baptism is shown - hence in part why I'm trying to trace his death entry.

(3) Möskirchen - I confess I got as far as Mooskirch in Steiermark (though found no clear supporting evidence) but didn't identify the Messkirch in Baden. The weight of evidence presented for Messkirch looks pretty solid though.

I guess I'll need to try and contact the local church / archives and see where I can go with that.

This being said, and given the fact that my German is not as good as I'd like it to be, I'd still have a few question marks:

(A) The Todtenschein states "von Eupen aus Limbourgisch gebuertig". What does this actually mean? Was he definitely born in Eupen? Or could the German mean only that he lived in Eupen but was born in the Limburg region?

(B) "auf den gewöhnliche Ort christlichen Gebrauch nach beerdiget worden seije". What does this actually mean? Does it necessarily imply that he was taken to the local (Catholic) church to be buried? Or could there be some other interpretation?

(C) I had also been wondering whether the Todtenregister could possibly refer to some military death register rather than a church kirchenbuch.

Could anyone help with tracking down the "Todtenregister Folio 22" as mentioned in the following death extract. I'm hoping it might contain some further details allowing me to identify Peter Bernard's family.

Todten-Schein

« on: Thursday 01 August 13 17:24 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the pointers.

Under the Matricula on-line, I could see that Tiefenthal actually formed a part of Niederrussbach parish and that registers exist for the period I'm looking at. Was very excited. And then disappointed. Looking for families Körner and Hopreis in period 1700 to 1730 - nothing in baptism register! Will have to expand the search.

But at least I know where to look now !

Thanks again.

Europe / Austria - Niederösterreich - Tiefenthal
« on: Friday 19 July 13 19:16 BST (UK)  »

Just found out that I have a 5x great grandfather born in Tiefenthal in Niederösterreich in Austria, prob. in the early 1700s. Not got a clue how to find any records for him - presumably church records?
Would appreciate any help.

Bedfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Hulatts buried in Milton Ernest

Dear Dave and John,

Thanks for the pointers with Samuel Hulatt - the Well Street clue makes the case so I absolutely concur with the conclusion that the 1869 death makes sense for the Samuel I'm after, which I'll now follow up. THanks a million.

Richard
