The Common Room / Finally found birth but 'wrong' mothers name!
« on: Sunday 10 September 06 16:07 BST (UK)  »
Just wondered if anyone can come up with a logical explanation for this?

After years of searching I have finally found my great gran Amelia's birth certificate and knocked down one of my longest standing brick walls.  See previous threads on the subject:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,44461.0.html

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,51517.0.html

Amelia's brother Aneurin's birth cert named his mother as Jane Rees (formerly Price).  With some guess work and a lot of luck I eventually discovered a Jane Price had married a John James c1874.  They were living in Aberavon in 1881 with 3 children who I am pretty certain are 3 of the 'Rees' children in 1891.

I knew from Amelia's death cert that she was born 19 August 1888.  The birth certificate I now have is for Amelia Rees JAMES born 19 August 1888.

My theory was that Jane married John James and then probably after being widowed had Amelia by Aneurin Rees.  I don't think Aneurin & Jane ever married so I expected the birth cert to have no father's name which it doesn't.  So far so good...

However the big surprise was that Amelia Rees James' mother is named as Ann James formerly Price

Everything else seems to fit so I'm wondering if this could be a mistake such as a transcription error at some point?

Any ideas welcome

Debbie

The Common Room / How much to tell?
« on: Thursday 29 September 05 14:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I know there have been many posts on a similar theme before but I have a decision to make fairly urgently & could do with some advice.

I have been in contact with a 3rd cousin through GR.  I have said that I am happy to send him a copy of my tree which I still am.

I have discovered there is a very good possibility that my cousin's great granduncle married his own niece (my great grandaunt married her uncle).  The marriage took place in the early 1900s.

As my 3rd cousin is also researching the same tree I realise he could well discover the same but should I include the details on the tree I send.  I still think there is a possibility that the couple who married were not as closely related as first seems.  Maybe my cousin can help solve the mystery.  But how do I bring up a subject like that with someone I have only 'spoken' to by email?

I know a lot of people wouldn't be too bothered unless it was a close relative concerned.  However, I have had a bad experience with a distant relative suddenly not being related when I mentioned an illegitimate birth 170 years ago so I am a little wary of causing offence.

Any comments or advice please?

Debbie

Ann 42 Compton Pauncefoot
Anna Maria 13 Scholar South Cadbury, Som.
Eliza 12 Sunday School Scholar South Cadbury, Som.
Mark 9 South Cadbury, Som.
Elizabeth 7 South Cadbury, Som.

DYKE Thomas 49 Ag. Lab. South Cadbury, Som. (In Milborne Port 1841)
Diana 48 Corton Denham
William 19 Ag. Lab. South Cadbury, Som.
Elizabeth 16 South Cadbury, Som.
Eliza 13 South Cadbury, Som.

Mary Ann 37 Stepney
Emily 10 Somerset Pointington
George 7 Camel Hill
William 5 Sparkford, Som.
John 3 South Cadbury, Som.

Possibly their mother?
DYKE Elizabeth 68 Lab Widow Weston Bamfield(Weston Bampfylde) was living alone in South Cadbury in both 1851 and 1861.  Can't find her in 1841.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Where do I start?
« on: Tuesday 20 September 05 15:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Having just about mastered scanning photos I would love to learn how to improve them.  I looked at a colourising tutorial (just out of interest I probably need to start with something more basic?) but it didn't seem to be compatible with software I have.

I have PhotoStudio2000 which came with my scanner.  I find it easy to use for scanning, cropping & resizing. I have used it for red eye removal but that's about it.

This photo is the only one I have of my Nan before the age of about 50.  My Nan Edith is on the left.  Her baby brother Morgan was born in the summer of 1919.

I haven't got access to the original - this copy was sent to my father.  I scanned at the highest resolution I could without getting lots of wavy lines.

Any (polite ;D) suggestions??

Many thanks

Debbie  ;)

Hi everyone,

I know it would be too much to ask for a wider search but I would be very grateful if someone could find this family in the earlier censuses.

In 1861 they were at 30 Bow Street, Westminster St Paul

James Jones 60 Clerkenwell, Middlesex, Head
Melicent Jones 60 Balsall, Warwickshire, Wife
James Jones 36 Balsall, Warwickshire, Son
Melicent Jones 34 Balsall, Warwickshire, Daughter
Alfred Jones 32 Soho, Middlesex, Son

I am hoping the family were in the same area in 1841 & 1851.  There is no sign of them in Warwickshire in 1841 where some of the children were born.  Daughter Milicent is visiting relatives in Warwickshire in 1851 but no sign of the others there.

Any help appreciated

Thankyou

Debbie  ;)

Hi everyone,

Sorry, I know this is going to be a bit of a long shot.  I'm trying to find a Martha Rebecca BIRD who I think married a William JONES ::) in 1860.

According to the 1861 census Martha R JONES was born in Hilperton abt 1834 so I'm hoping in 1841 she was still there with parents.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Occupation Interests / Occupation - any ideas please?
« on: Monday 29 August 05 23:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I could do with some help to read Thomas Frizzell's occupation in 1841 (Milton Abbas, Dorset).  I'm sure it's something really obvious but I just can't make it out.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Debbie  :)
