« on: Saturday 27 August 05 23:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I would be very grateful for a look up of the following family in Liverpool 1851.

Mary BURNS aged abt 56 born Dublin - said to be widowed in 1861 so I do not have husband's name if alive in 1851.

William BURNS son 22 born Liverpool
Martha BURNS daughter 19 born Liverpool
Mary Ann BURNS daughter 12 born Liverpool

Thanks in advance

Debbie

Dorset Lookup Requests / 1851 Milton Abbas Look up please
« on: Tuesday 23 August 05 19:10 BST (UK)  »
I would be very grateful if someone could please find this family for me probably in Milton Abbas, 1851.

Stephen KNIGHT aged about 56 born Stickland, Dorset
His wife could be either Ruth(1861) or Mary(1871) aged about 59 born Wallop, Hampshire.

I think they are the same person as age and place of birth are the same.

There could also be a daughter Amelia aged about 9 born in Milton Abbas.

Thanks in advance,

Debbie  :)

The Common Room / Newspaper report likely?
« on: Sunday 07 August 05 16:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I have just discovered that a 3xgreat grandfather lived to be 106!  At first I was sceptical but I have tracked him through the censuses and his age seems consistent with him being born around 1815.  He was said to be 86 in 1901 and he died in January 1922.  I was sent details from a fellow researcher and have to admit I assumed it was a misprint until I found the reference showing age at death of 106.

I'm now wondering if this kind of thing would have made the local paper either when my ancestor died or perhaps when he reached 100.  Does anyone know when 100th birthday telegrams began?

Gloucestershire / Havening & Tedbury?
« on: Thursday 21 July 05 17:28 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Isaac Close appears in Lea Lower (Herefordshire) in 1851 born in Tedbury, Gloucestershire.

In 1861 he is said to have been born in Havening, Gloucestershire.

I have tried to find these places on GENUKI - the closest I can find are Avening & Tetbury which are only a few miles apart but does anyone have any better suggestions?

Many thanks for any help,

Debbie

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / 1851 Upper/ Lower Lea look up please
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 17:06 BST (UK)  »
I would be very grateful if someone could find William and Comfort Close for me.  They would be aged about 22 and 18.  William was born in Lea or Leigh, Glos and Comfort was born in Longhope, Glos.  Their daughter Hannah or Dianna was baptised in June 1851 so may have been born by the time of the census.

In 1861 the family are living in Lea, Herefordshire but the children's births are given as Lea/Leigh Gloucestershire.  Very confusing but they are not in Leigh, Gloucestershire in 1851 so I am hoping they are just over the border.

Many thanks for any help.

The Common Room / Photo - any ideas?
« on: Monday 20 June 05 12:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I have just made contact with a relative who has sent me this photo(more of a plate really).  My great granddad was one of seven brothers and all I know is that this is likely to be two of them.

I would therefore appreciate 'guestimates' of the age of the two brothers and when it might have been taken.

I realise that men's/boys clothes are probably the most difficult to date so grateful for any help in this.

I am adding the second one for comparison as it is dated and we know which brother this was:

Samuel Randell(born 1879) - says on the back "Taken on Sep 29th 1899 age 20"

Many thanks

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 & 1851 Clayhidon please
« on: Friday 17 June 05 17:53 BST (UK)  »
In 1861 there is a William Burrough age 57 born in Hemyock, living in Clayhidon with wife Ann age 50.  He may have had a daughter (called Martha Mary Rendell in 1851 census) c1822 in Clayhidon

I would therefore be very grateful if someone could find any William Burrough/s or Burrow/s in the earlier censuses.

Many thanks

Debbie

Devon / Trying to find a mother.
« on: Wednesday 15 June 05 18:00 BST (UK)  »
Mary Clapp married in 1871 naming Arthur Clapp as her father.  My suspicion that he was a figment of her imagination is strengthened by her birth cert. which has no father named & mother's name Mary Clapp.

According to the birth cert.  Mary Jane was born in Upottery, Devon 23 July 1850.  In the 1851 census sample there is the following family:

Sarah Clapp Upottery, Devon Head Unm 50
Mary Ann Clapp Upottery, Devon Daughter Unm 19
Charlotte Clapp Upottery, Devon Daughter 13
Mary Jane Clapp Upottery, Devon Gdaughter 8 Months
Robert Bromfield Upottery, Devon Lodger 47

From this I would guess that Mary Ann is Mary Jane's mother.  I am a bit unsure as on both the certificate and a baptism record the mother is simply 'Mary' not Mary Ann.  Wouldn't the full name usually be used on an official document?

I would therefore like to find them in 1861 hopefully together.  I think Mary Jane's mother may have died or married and Mary Jane could be listed under a different surname.  By 1871 she is using the name Clapp and is living in Cotleigh where she married that year.  In all censuses from 1871-1891 her place of birth is Upottery.

Do you think I can assume I have the correct mother and daughter?

Thanks for any help in this,

Debbie  :)
