Completed Census Requests / 1841 Census - Completed
« on: Tuesday 05 April 05 01:44 BST (UK)  »
I'd be very grateful if someone could look up Joseph Hurse (possibly Hurst) in 1841 Newport.   Joseph was born in Pillgwenlly, Newport in Dec 1839 so I am hoping the family may have still been in Newport.

Father also Joseph probably born in Somerset, a Shoemaker;
Mother Hannah born in Somerset would have been abt 31.

Any help appreciated.

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / 1851 look up please
« on: Tuesday 05 April 05 01:04 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a George Rendell who married in Cotleigh, Devon in Oct 1871 age 25.  On the cert it said he was living in Monkton and named his father as William Rendell.  One of the witnesses had surname Lock(can't read the first name).

In the 1871 census there is a George Rendall age 24, born in Uffculme, living in Combe Raleigh with a lodger called James Lock.

The only one I definitely know is my GG Grandfather is the George Rendell living in Huntspill, Somerset in 1881 who was born in Uffculme abt 1846.  In the 1891/1901 censuses he has changed spelling to Randell and place of birth N/K and then in Devon only.

In the 1851 sample there is a George Rendle (age 5) living in Upottery, Honiton.  What makes me think there may be a link is that all the children have the same names as George's children and there is a George Lock living with them.  Also George's future wife was born in Upottery and they married near there.
Unfortunately the Head is not in the sample.  It just says Mary Rendle (married) b Clayhidon, age 28.  Her son George is said to have been born in Upottery.

If anyone could check the address of Gapland, Upottery, Honiton I would be very grateful.

The Common Room / 1851 Census sample
« on: Tuesday 05 April 05 00:14 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone looked at this on Ancestry?  I have found a possible ancestor on here but the problem is when I clicked on 'other family members' it shows a married woman and other children but no 'Head'.  I think one of the children could be my GG grandfather and I know his father's name but not his mother.

Does anyone know how the sample is taken?  Is there a chance the Head of this family could have been on the previous page and not in the sample?

Thanks in advance

The Common Room / WW1 Occupations
« on: Wednesday 30 March 05 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have posted this on the Armed Forces board but I think it might have more chance of getting an answer here.

I have a death cert for my grandmother's twin sister who died age 3 in 1918.  In the Occupation section it says

"Daughter of James Assender Royal Air Force (Colliery Haulier)"

I am curious to know whether this just means Colliery Haulier was my great grandad's usual occupation before the war  (it was in 1901).  There is no entry for him in the WW1 medals list so I am assuming he was non-combatant but I am wondering if he would have continued with his usual job during the war.

Does anyone know if there were 'reserved occupations' in WW1?

It does seem strange though if he was in the RAF and working underground.   ???

I am trying to find out more about my great grandmother's life and whether my great grandfather was at home during the war.

Any thoughts anyone?

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / Jones 1861 Weston-super-Mare
« on: Tuesday 29 March 05 14:17 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has the 1861 census covering Weston-super-Mare, I'd be very grateful for a look-up of the following:

William Jones age approx 5 born WsM
Sisters: Eliza (7) and Emily (3)
His mother Ellen Jones age approx 30/32.

I am trying to confirm William's father's name.  I think it might have been George Jones.  He had died by 1871 but there was a son born to Ellen after 1865 so I am hoping to narrow down his year of death.

I have reason to think Ellen Taylor married George Jones in 1852 and that they were William's parents.

Thanks in advance hopefully  :)

Hi everyone,

I've posted about this on the Wales board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,44298.0.html

but I just wondered if anyone here would mind having a look at this for me?

The main problems are:

I can't find Amelia Rees (my great gran) in 1901 census.
I don't know where she was born and can't find birth.
Her death cert in 1975 said she was born in Monmouthshire  ??? (19 Aug 1888) but according to my Dad her family came from "Swansea direction"  :o

Sorry there's a lot  :-[

1907 Abertillery English Baptist Chapel

1871 Garth Road, Llangynwyd, Glamorgan

Any help or polite suggestions  ;) gratefully received

Wales / Trying to trace birth from marriage cert.
« on: Monday 21 March 05 00:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site...so hope I've posted on the right board.

My query relates to my great gran Amelia Assender (nee Rees).  I have her death cert which says she died on 26 Mar 1975 in Abergavenny and that she was born 19 Aug 1888 in Monmouthshire(doesn't say town).  The details are given by her son so I realise they could be less than accurate.  I do know that Amelia lived all her married life in Abertillery which leads me onto her marriage cert.  On the cert it says Amelia Rees was 20 on 5th August 1907 when she married James Assender (23) in The English Baptist Chapel, Abertillery.  Her father's name was given as Aneurin Rees (coalminer).  The same address was given for both bride and groom in Abertillery.

My father told me that Amelia's family were from the Swansea area so when I've looked for Amelia in the census I haven't just looked at Monmouthshire.  So far I have found only one Aneurin(have checked different spellings) with a daughter called Amelia (age 2 born in Aberavon) in the 1891 census living in Llantarnam.

I have traced the same Aneurin Rees  from 1871 (Maesteg) through 1881 (Aberystruth) to 1891 (Llantarnam) to Neath Workhouse in 1901.

In all the censuses he is said to be working in the tin industry.  In 1871 he was a furnaceman at tin works and the others a tin roller man.

I have checked indexes for the right quarters on 1837online, for Amelia's birth but cannot find it.  I know without this I am just guessing that this particular Aneurin Rees is my gg grandfather.

If anyone has any other ideas I would be really pleased as this is starting to become an obsession  ::)

Sorry this is so long winded ...didn't want to leave anything relevant out  ;)
