Couple of sources for Ada on Ancestry - UK, Medical and Dental Students Registers, 1882-1937 and UK Medical Registers, 1859-1959. Ada registered as a student in 1899 and is listed in the register until 1955. The Medical Registers may be available in some large libraries or university libraries as well as the Medical Directory. You sometimes get additional qualification in the directory.

The Common Room / Re: Occupation tilemaker

Tile maker probably refers to the making of unglazed drainage tiles which were (are?) used for land drainage. Could the change in occupation be due to a downturn in silk weaving and he had to look for other employment?

Scotland / Re: ScotlandsPeople: Searching by Reference Number and RD
« on: Saturday 11 May 19 14:28 BST (UK)  »
The advanced search on the old site was a good way of doing this. It is possible to search without a name only specifying the year and district name although it is not possible to include a reference number. When checking to see if it was possible to search without a name I searched for Abbey as a Registration District thinking it would bring up Abbey, Renfrewshire but it also brought up New Abbey and Abbey St Bathans, even restricting to Renfrewshire it still brings up New Abbey and Abbey St Bathans. Looking at the site address it appears to be doing a search for Abbey anywhere in registration district.

Scotland / Re: Detailed List of Old Parochial Registers of Scotland 1872
« on: Thursday 09 May 19 18:56 BST (UK)  »
The pdf files on NRS website under List of Old Parish Registers only list the periods when each type of register was kept by the parish. The 1872 Detailed List and Bloxham also give details about the condition of what is covered in the registers. For example a birth register may not record the mother's names or there may be gaps in the register. The good thing about Bloxham is that it is listed in alphabetical order of parish not by county then parish and the condition notes are given as part of the parish listing.

Thanks flst I had not thought of looking at the Internet Archive due to copyright.

V Ben Bloxham published  "Key to the Parochial Registers of Scotland" in 1970. This is a reformating of the 1872 Detailed List and the parishes are arranged alphabetically. It is probably difficult to find a copy, I managed to find a second hand one on line.

Looks as if the area had not been redeveloped by 1955 - https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=19&lat=57.1494&lon=-2.0948&layers=170&b=1. Don't know if there had been any renumbering between the 1890s and 1955.

Lanarkshire / Re: 499 Glasgow Road, Wishaw - where was it?
« on: Tuesday 15 January 19 20:43 GMT (UK)  »
NLS have digitised the large scale 1/1250 1/2500 for 1944-1967 some of which show street numbers. Looking at Wishaw it was surveyed in 1956 and 499 Glasgow Road was located then about where ATS Euromaster Tyres is now, this is assuming that no renumbering had been carried out. As Forfarian has suggested you need to locate the address in the census and try to position it with identifiable  landmarks and/or adjacent streets.
