Occupation Interests / Would a merchant seaman need a passport
« on: Tuesday 01 March 11 20:41 GMT (UK)  »
My Scottish ancestor spent about 14 years as a merchant seaman.    late 1870s to early 1890s.   Supposedly he saw many parts of the world.    Would he have needed a passport.    As a single chap we think he may have spent some time on shore in the various parts of the world he visited.

Does anyone have any ideas please.

Thanks John.    I could kick myself as I was there last November.   I hadn't thought about Voters lists at that time.

Cheers

It looks as if there is some writing or embossing on the lower right corner of the top left pic.

I reckon the top two are the same man.    Could the bottom left be son of whoever is in top two.

Hello Craig

If you really want to buy a death cert write to Leeds Reg Office at the Town Hall.  Quote the ref nos you have taken for the cases shown on Free BMD.   Ask the Reg office to issue you a certificate only if the cause of death was by accident (explosion) and the residence was the school on Headingley Lane.    Also say what hubby was called.      Enclose payment with a request that they only issue a cert if all details you give match up to one of the deaths.

Cheers

Hello again

Queen Street and Whitehall Road may have been at a road junction 200 years ago in the area of Leeds quite close to the centre as we know it today of Wortley.   Today the two roads are close to each other but do not actually meet.   A couple of miles from Hunslet but still south of the River Aire.    Originally it would have been the introduction of the railway which upset the street layouts and resulted in building demolition etc.   There is no church in that area today which has been redeveloped at least twice in my own lifetime so goodness knows how much has happened since 1796.

Mill Hill Chapel is actually in the centre of Leeds in our city square.

millhillchapel.org.uk is the website if you haven't already looked there.   Interesting info.

I would say that it is nearer to Hunslet than Queen Street bearing in mind that worshippers no doubt had to walk to church.

Good Hunting
