World War Two / Re: Wartime airfields

Thanks everyone for your responses.  Kyt and Wendi for the web sites.

Liverpool Annie - what a little monkey you are.  Fancy taking advantage of a poor little lad a long way from home and taking what may have been his last gum.    Seriously now I have a  distant cousin in USA (found by doing family history) whose uncle was at all 3 of the airfields I mentioned but he is rather an old boy now of course and it is is not too clear how long and when he was at these places.   His neice thought it would be good to find out anything really.  What if he was the one with the gum!!!!!!!

Cheers

World War Two / Wartime airfields

Hello

Are there any Airforce WW2 veterans out there who may have been at the following airfields - Burtonwood nr Warrington.  Matching, Essex and Tangmere, Sussex.

Apparantly the US Army Air Force used these bases.  A distant relative in US served at all of them.  I am assuming that there would be RAF personnel also.

Cheers

Yorkshire (West Riding) Completed Requests / Re: Finding a Grave in Leeds
« on: Friday 05 January 07 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
Leeds City Council, Cemeteries/Crematoria Section, Lawnswood Crematorium, Otley Road, Leeds LS16 6AH.

If you write to this address giving as much info as possible about the grave you seek this department covers all Leeds Cemeteries.  They were very helpful to me recently.

The Friends of Becket Street Cemetery has a website - www.becketstreetcemetery.org.uk.  Once you establish that there is a grave there the site is very useful in helping to locate.

Leeds Central Library has an index of Becket St Burials.  If you are unable to go there yourself the staff may undertake a short search.  The email address is local.studies@leeds.gov.uk.
If you live in the Leeds area other libraries may also have this index.  It is worth checking.

If going to the cemetery would be difficult, once you have the details, email me offsite and I will try and go for you.

Good hunting

Lanarkshire / Delbeth Convent-1901 look up please
« on: Saturday 26 August 06 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Two sisters, surname Cairns but first names unknown, were reputedly nuns in Delbeth Convent, Toll Cross, Shettlestone,Glasgow.  In 1901 they could have been anything from 20-60 in age.  Not much to go on.  Is there a kindly soul out there who may be able to search 1901 by address rather than name.   I have tried Scotlands People without success.  It would be great if I could see a list of the convent residents.  There is a chance that the surname is spelt differently with a K perhaps Kearns.
I wrote to Glasgow library a while ago and have had no reply.

Many thanks

World War Two / Re: WW2,Can anyone identify my Dads regiment?
« on: Thursday 26 May 05 00:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello Ann
Hope you are having some success with your search.   If all else fails the British Legion should be able to help.  Even if it is only to put you in the right direction.

My dad was in the army in WW2 and wore the same sort of cap your dad is wearing in the photo on his own.  My hubby was a 1950s soldier and tells me that the cap is called a forage cap.  All non Scottish army regiments would have forage caps.  I don't suppose this little bit of info will help your search but it is interesting.

In the photo taken with one other chap, they are sitting on a wall with fancy wrought iron work which looks like fleur de lys or Prince of Wales Feathers design.  This might help to identify the place it was taken.

If you think it was Isle of Wight why not send a copy of the photo to the main library on the island.    You never know.

Also if you are in the UK - try teletext on Channel 4.  It has a free Service Pals feature.  You can post messages.  Page 152.   If you are not in UK I will do it for you if you like.  Send me a private message with all the details.

Bye

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / 1841/1851 census look up
« on: Sunday 20 March 05 02:11 GMT (UK)  »
My Wiltshire ancestors were named BLIZZARD. Probably in Malmesbury.  Only first name I am sure of is Sam or Samuel.

Many thanks in anticipation.
