Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with 1871 census entry! (COMPLETED)
« on: Thursday 03 February 11 19:36 GMT (UK)  »
I've just returned from a visit to the library to access some census images on Ancestry.  Can anyone help with some deciphering of the following entry from RG10/3681 Folio 31 Page 8 (Schedule 42) - Northern Etchells, Cheshire:

There is a William Matson, transcribed as 40 years old, a servant to the Shenton family.
I think the location reads Peel Lane, Peel Hall - can anyone see this clearer?
I think the age is transcribed incorrectly as I make out 46 years rather than 40 years?
Finally, most of the servants (there appear to be few!) are listed the same in the occupation field, but I can only make out 'servant', can anyone identify the other word entered?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

The Lighter Side / Your Family Tree Magazine Feb 2011 (COMPLETED)
« on: Thursday 03 February 11 15:00 GMT (UK)  »
Just seen the new 100th edition of YFT on the shelves in the local supermarket.  It is encased in a cardboard sleeve due to the amount of freebies, but just wondered if anyone has purchased a copy of this yet and what the contents actually are as there wasn't much information on the packet.  It says there is free access to the 1911 Census for everyone - what is the extent of the free access?  It also advertises some free photographs - are these of the readers choice or are they pre-printed photographs already included?  Thanks to anyone who has information!

Family History Beginners Board / How do I confirm a marriage from 1793?
« on: Wednesday 02 February 11 08:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a possible marriage in August 1793 of John Matson and Sarah Wright - in Hull.  How would I go about confirming this and establishing parents etc?  The details are from someone else's initial research?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Identify bottle / sign and offer a date?
« on: Wednesday 26 January 11 07:21 GMT (UK)  »
I've had this thread moved here from the East Yorkshire boards as we think we need specialist help on deciphering parts of this photos and also in trying to date it.  Any help appreciated on ideas for the bottle the lady is holding, the sign in the window and any ideas on possible dating.  There are closer scans of the bottle and sign on page two.  For dating purposes, details about the physical photograph included in the message which contains the second close-up scan of the bottle.
Thanks

Original thread:

I'm pretty sure this photo was taken somewhere in Hull and the suggestion from family is that it could be the old infirmary (I've not got any details of where this was and when the 'new' one replaced it).

A guess from me would put this in the 1930's/1940's but I don't really know!

If anyone recognises where this is, and at a real stretch can offer a dating period, it might lead to me beginning to understand the reason for the picture and what is going on!

Any suggestions/opinions or advice would be appreciated, thanks!

If anyone is nearby, could they have a look for a grave for me in Hull Western Cemetery?

I'm told by the bereavement service at Hull City Council that the grave is in the 'old grounds' which is the Chanterlands Avenue area.

The grave is of Thomas Matson, died 08/02/1864 aged 40 (Buried 18/02/1864)

The grave number is 1833, Compartment 21 (not sure how helpful this might be!).

The Hull City Council's burial number for their records was 1358.

I expect the grave may be in poor condition but I would love to see a picture of it if anyone can find it.  I currently live in Manchester but hope to travel across soon.

Many thanks to anyone looking.

The Common Room / Quick query re buying certificates COMPLETED
« on: Monday 24 January 11 07:36 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking to buy a marriage certificate (as I've now got to a point where this is the only solution!) - the website states that I must include an SAE.  From experience, is an A5 SAE adequate or am I best to send an A4?!  Many thanks.

I have no idea of the occasion, and only know one of the faces...

My family think that the photo is taken outside a pub on St James Street, off Hessle Road in Hull (best guess).
The photograph was taken prior to 1959, and I can clearly see the sign above the door reads that the licence is held by Thomas Poppleton.

Any ideas of the name of the pub and at a real push, the reason for the photograph (button-holes indicate an event of some kind) and a great deal of effort has been made to drag the stools and chairs outside!  A date would also be great!  Any pointers would be greatly received.  Thank you.

World War Two / Royal Engineers - 1025 Port Operating Coy (Belgium 1944)
« on: Saturday 22 January 11 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm very new to researching my family history, and I feel that really I should be posting on the Beginners forum due to my ignorance of my subject, but also realise as this is the specialist area, I might be able to tap into some clever souls here - basically I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place!

I have inherited a wonderful collection of family photos and memorabilia from my grandparents and their families and amongst them is an incredible Christmas card.  Inside the card, at the bottom the following is printed: 1025 Port Operating Coy, Royal Engineers, B.L.A.

Firstly what does BLA stand for?

The front of the card is printed 'Belgium' and has the crest of the Royal Engineers and '1944' printed beneath.

The card is printed with the greeting 'All Good Wishes for Xmas and 1945' and then 'From:' printed and the words written by my ancestor "Dad, ?pR. Matson 14599045"  Because of my lack of knowledge I am unable to decipher the letters before the surname, it could be SpR, LpR, JpR...

I realise the huge value of having his service number recorded here and hope that this might lead to be finding out who my ancestor is, what they were doing and the details of their service, however I have no idea where to start!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated in directing me from here....  Thanks
