I wonder if anyone can help me establish the address on a 1891 Census return?

The address is for Sculcoates, Hull and is on census reference RG12/3927/27/6 ; for Robert (born 1822) and Sarah (transcribed as Sweet) Matson (born 1824 but mis-transcribed as being only 6 on this return!).

I think the street name starts with a D but I can't make any sense of it at all.
Any help would be appreciated!

Completed Census Requests / 1851 look up (COMPLETED)

I am trying to find Thomas Matson, wife Ann and sons William and Robert on the 1851 census.

They were born, and still living in Hull at 22 Middle Street.

Robert was born 1823, Ann 1828, William 1849 and Robert is 4 months old at the time of the 1851 census.

I have a scrap of information which suggests the partial reference of '2363/16' but I haven't been successful with a search on Ancestry, I can see that the people are there on findmypast but I don't have a subscription for that site.  If anyone can let me know how they have been transcribed and the reference for the page I'd be very grateful!

I hope that this is enough information.  Thank you.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help deciphering 1851 census (COMPLETED)
« on: Saturday 05 March 11 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone could help with deciphering a family on the 1851 census I would really appreciate it.  I think the reference is HO107/2363 although I'm not 100% on the last two numbers I'm afraid.  Top centre of the the page the number 29 is printed, but I can't see a page number?  It is the parish of Holy Trinity, Hull - but I can't decipher the street names across the page...

The name I have searched for is John Matson born around 1807 with wife Mary Ann born around 1809.  I think I can make the family out as John (a mariner), Mary Ann his wife, Sarah their daughter, a dressmaker; John their son, Elizabeth their daughter and Ann their daughter with the last three children being listed as at school.  Only the husband and wife are married.  They were all born in Hull, Yorkshire.  There are two further names listed who have different surnames but I can't make them out nor their relationship to John.

Can anyone confirm the names of the children, the names of the other people at the address, the address and the ages?  Also is the reference right?

Thanks for looking.

Hello, I hope someone can help me decipher the address for the census return RG9/3621/88/5 from Seamer.  I think this is near Scarborough; although I also can't make out the words written around the parish/township box at the top left of the form!

I'm interested in schedule 18 - something Gate House.  The head of the household is listed as a railway labourer which may be a clue here.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

I posted this message on the For Sale / Wanted / Events board at the beginning of January, and have just found out today that my library is unable to provide a regional loan service from a Hull library for this item.  And so I take the advice of other members of Roots and ask on this board...

I realise this is a (very) long shot, but felt it worth asking here of all places!

I've just found that a local history book was published by Lockington Publishing, North Ferriby in 1983.   Written by JD Hicks it was called "Our Orphans: The Story of the Hull Seamen's and General Orphanage 1853-1979" and will have had a very limited run and distribution.

If anyone knows of any copies which I'd be able to look at I'd really appreciate any information!

I believe there are copies at the Hull History Centre and The Carnegie Heritage Centre in Hull, however I live in Manchester and am currently unable to get to those sites.  Thank you.

Again, I am having some difficulty deciphering the writing for the address on a census entry from 1851.  The reference is HO107/1505/559/9 - it's Hackney, Dalston, Tower Hamlet, Middlesex.

The first entry on the page, listed as schedule 31, I can make out the second word as probably Grove.  I think it's number 6 with numbers 7 and 8 following down the page and written clearer in each instance, however I still cannot make out what the first word is!

Also, with the names, the second is transcribed as Bessey, and this is assuming that the enumerator has a stylised 'double S'.  The third name is only transcribed (from all I have found) as Catharine Matson, however I'm squinted and think her middle name may be Eliza at a guess due to the pen stroke going into the next row which I'm taking to be a z?

Finally, on the occupation column, for George Beilby Matson I can make out Stock Brokers Clerk, but I'm not sure if I'm making just making Broker fit as it makes sense, could it be another word?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi everyone,

I'm having real problems deciphering some census entries and wondered if anyone could make any details out/make any suggestions for me?

The reference is RG9/3661/95/16 and it's the Parish of Chapelry Brompton(?) in the borough of Northallerton.  I'm trying to make sense of the family which is on the bottom of this page, schedule number 80.

Firstly, I can't make out the residence. It appears to be Station something, possible Hall with two further words written below which again I can't make out.

Any suggestions for the three people listed would also be appreciated, I think I can make out

John M Harrison / head / married / 51 / Station Master North Eastern Railway Company / Yorkshire, Knaresborough
Thomas Matson / son / married / 20 / Telegraph Clerk British and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company / Yorkshire, Knaresborough
Jane Wood / servant / unmarried / 17 / ? ? / Yorkshire, East Cowton.

I am unsure of the initial in the first name as the M, if it is an M, in the second surname doesn't match.  I'm also unsure of the word 'son' and only really question this as the surnames are different but I know there could be reasons behind this.  The maritial status is also difficult to decipher!  When it's come to the occupations it's all a bit of a mess and I've guessed with the telegraph company as it almost fits for one that did exist at the time!  I'm not sure Cowton or Chapelry exist(ed) either!.

I'm not sure if I can post the image, but if it will help I could maybe put some of it up?
Thanks.

I have accessed the 1901 census entry for Mark W Matson but have been unable to decipher the address and occupation listed with any confidence.  Unfortunately I accessed the record at the local library and so haven't got a copy of the image to post here, but the reference was RG13/4507 Page 29, Schedule 147 - Hull, Holy Trinity.

My best guess on the address is Floral Grove, but I could not make out the occupation listed at all.  Mark Matson is single, aged 19 and listed along with his mother, Margaret Matson who is a widow aged 59, both born in Hull.

If anyone can find the record and have a look, I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

I've returned from a visit to the library today, to access some census information from Ancestry.  However, I've noticed that I've not recorded all the information that I wanted to and wondered if anyone could fill the blanks for me, while I prepare myself some templates for the next visit to ensure I get all the details I search for on my next trip!

1881 Census:
RG11/4772 is all of the reference number I have...
address is 76 Edgar Street, Hull.
The member of the family I searched on and found was William Matson born in 1851.
However all I have is that he was a fisherman (out of work).  I failed to write down the rest of the family and their relationships, ages, occupations...

If anyone can find this from the scant information I did write down I'd really appreciate the blanks filling in!
Thanks.
