Tipperary / Historical House
« on: Saturday 10 August 19 00:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I would like to know what records I would need to look for to find the history behind an historical house. The one I am looking for was most likely part of a very large Estate.

I am hoping to find records of who lived in it between 1840 and 1900.

Thanks for any ideas.

Europe / Swedish and Danish lastnames
« on: Tuesday 23 July 19 07:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I  hope someone here may be able to help with this last name.

person:
Karin Neilssen  (1) ....in Ships passenger list from Hamburg 1871  arrival port Hobart town, Tasmania. [Now part of Australia] eventually being in Rockhampton, Queensland, where she married, as below.

On this listing she is noted as Frau  which I think means Mrs. in English.

(2) also  My grandfather's Birth Certificate  from Queensland Australia  1881. Mother Kate  no mmn.
His sister   1883  her Certificate has Kate Neilssen as mmn
His brother  1885  his cert has  Karin Nelson

(3)  The marriage Cert. for Karin and her husband Carl  1879  has Karin Neilssen as her last name.

(4)   Also on this particular Cert both sets of their parents are given .

Karin Neilssen's  are Nils Larssen [father]  and Christina Jensen  [mother].

I have tried to find a birth cert for Karin  as either Neilssen or Larssen but I am stumped by what I cannot read.

(6)   My elderly Aunt has given me this information:  Karin Neilssen came from Jenarp, Sweden.  She apparently immigrated via Denmark and Germany.

The person she married in 1879  was Carl August Schmidt . He was from Copenhagen, Denmark.  He  immigrated in 1877 to Brisbane, eventually getting to Rockhampton, Queensland where he met and married Karin.

What I would like to understand is how she is Neilssen when neither of her parents are and how to interpret the Swedish documents.

Many thanks for any help here,

The Common Room / Swedish Surnames
« on: Monday 22 July 19 03:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I have  great grandparents    on Marriage Cert in Queensland Australia for  grandfather.

For the great grandmother  they are:

Nils Larssen  [Father]   and Christina Jensen   [Mother] .

Now their daughter is given and Karin Neilssen on this marriage Certificate.

I have found both parties to the grandparents immigrated at  different times as apparently single persons.   However in the case of the lady,  Karin Neilssen,  she is stated as Frau on the passenger list in 1871 from HAmburg to Hobart town.  This leads me to think she is or was married.  Is this correct?

I have tried to find the parents marriage but it is almost hopeless as I do not follow any of the naming issues in Denmark, Sweden or Germany.

I have found a few bits on Ancestry but it is just so confusing.  I found Nils Larssen  with a daughter Karin but he seems to be married to a completely different person.

The nearest I see is Nilsson.    Why would she be using Neilssen when her father was Larssen and Mother jensen?

Help!  please!

Tipperary / Irish Census Records
« on: Friday 28 June 19 12:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have a questionabout the irish Census recs and where these might be accessed.

I have a relative   born C1844 in Ireland. Now I am wondering at what age would he have been required to be on the Census on his own and up to when he immigrated  in 1872.   So looking at the recs for 1851,1861 and 1871.  This would have been Co. Tipperary and or Co. Cork

any ideas please.

Thanks Essnell.

The Common Room / Passenger lists from Australia to England -where to find these.
« on: Tuesday 25 June 19 11:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,
Hoping you are able to help.

I have a lady who immigrated to Australia from, apparently Germany but possibly not.  Her passenger listing says her departure was from London, England, on the ship Robert Lees. The year was 1878. She also had her 10 yr old daughter with her.  So far no other part of her family.

The Daughter married in 1884, in Australia and after the death of her husband, married again in 1888 still in australia and she died there.
her mother seems to have left the country at some point. there is no death record or a relevant marriage record.

I have found a family of three immigrating to USA in 1863   16th April  most of the dates correlate with what is know about  this person and her husband.

Seeing she joined the ship for Australia in London, it seems to me that she, returned there with this child and took her to Australia.
I am hoping that I can find if she actually did this.

So question is how do I access info on shipping leaving Australia  in about 1878 and 1884.    also similar but earlier for America to England.

In the mean time I shall see if she is on any census recs in all three countries

Thanks for any ideas on how to tackle this.

Europe / Sommer family immigration and German links
« on: Thursday 23 May 19 09:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  I am hoping to find confirmation and birth links for one member of a family that immigrated to Australia. The family name is Sommer.

There are three brothers
1.  Wilhelm Friedrich Sommer born  abt.  1821    Klein Nordsee, Holstein, Germany
         married Yohanne Scharlotte Justine Witte

2. Christian Friedrich Sommer born abt 1825     same area
          Married Friedriche  Webber

3.  Johann Carl Friedrich Sommer  born abt 1826     same area
Married Friederiche Dorothea Nellor or Neller or Vetter.

their parents are:
 Daniel Sommer  and Margaretha Hahn

Wilhelm Friedrich Sommer born 1821 and his wife Charlotte [Witte] born 1822 immigrated in 1863 to Queensland Australia on the La Rochelle arriving  at Moreton Bay in September 1863. They had 9 children with them.
George 1846,  Wilhelmine 1847, Wilhelm [Friedrich] 1848, August 1848, Wilhelm Carl 1851, Johannes [Gustav]  1853,  Hermann [Freidrich Carl] 1856,  Marie  1857, Daniel [Ephriam]  1861.

Johannes Carl Friedrich Sommer born 1826 and Dorothea Neller born abt 1829  immigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1865 leaving Hamburg in May and arriving Maryborough September,on the Susanne Godeffroy.  They had three children with them,
[Anna] Margaretha [ Caroline] born 1856, [Johannus] Gustav [Friedrich]  born 1858, and Helene [Henriette Justine] born 1862.    and Anna Marie Elisabeth Sommer born and died 1855  at Zaatzke, Zaaztke, Ostprignitz, Brandenburg, Germany.

Johann Carl Friedrich Sommer fathered another child born Queensland Australia 1868,
Richard Bernhard ErwinSommer whose mother was Dorothe Keel.

On the Susanne Godeffroy was another person  Friedrich Sommer DOB 1840  and 25yrs

The middle brother Christian Friedrich possibly originally immigrated to the USA  and then later to
Australia. He had married Friederich Webber.
their children were
August Sommer  born 1849, Uckermark, Brandenburg, Germany.
Wilhelmine Friederike Albertine Sommer 1856  Wilhelmine, Uckermark, Brandenburg, Germany.
Maria Amalia Sommer born 1960 Wilhelmine, Uckermark, Brandenburg, Germany

Maria Amalia Sommer died in the USA in 1934, 25th April  Chicago, Illinois. USA.

My questions s about this Friedrich Sommer born 1840.  I have the details for his Queensland arrival which  has Friedrich Sommer   birth 1840   place  Klein-Nordsee, Holstein [Schelswig-Holstein]   age 25 yrs , occupation Butcher

I  cannot find his birth as Friedrich Sommer. I did find    this   Friedrich Wilhelm Julius Sommer  born 3 April 1840   Father Carl Sommer  mother Dorothea Sommer  place of birth: Munsterberg, Schlesien, Deutchland[Germany]

is he related or not.

I was able to get a image of the record but that is all a mystery to me. There appears to be a list of peoples names on there as well.  this is a Lutheran Baptism record 1817-1840

I will see if I can locate the record image or give you a link.

Thanks in advance for any input or thoughts.

The Common Room / Census record issue
« on: Friday 12 April 19 01:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello RootsChatters,

Not sure where to put this enquiry so here is the starting point.

I have been researching a family part in England and Ireland  and that is elsewhere on here.

In that I have a family with several children -  all of whom are easily checked for birth dates.
They are listed on one page of the Census and at the end of the list is a line right across the column         under that last child's information line so making it a double line.

All Ok there.

Below this is one persons information and that is also marked off.

the rest of the page is blank.  about a dozen lines.

issue...... i have found this family recorded on at least 3 and possibly more public sites.

on these some have more children.  Being a bit pedantic, I have looked for those children's records  and none actually correlate to the specific family.

I got a bit curious so looked at the next page... there they all were BUT

the top 5 lines on this page, all except the very last two columns, are unreadable, are solid black with ragged fuzzy edges - one can just see a name Frances,  then all the rest are clearly visible below. There is information in the last two columns on those top few lines.

I am thinking this is a totally new family.

To me that is perfectly understandable.

However online searches are showing all the information on the second page attached to those on the first page so the family is totally jumbled up.  People are using this as gospel!

How can this be checked at the coalface? and can that be rectified.

I'm not savvy enough in this for that. I  shall post relevant info If there is a way to deal with this.
Hoping and thanks,

essnell

The Common Room / Fostering children 1900's
« on: Monday 01 April 19 00:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I have just been reading a topic on Adoption in England.  So thought I would ask my question here as it is similar but not relevant to that topic.

I would like to know if children were Privately Fostered through church facilities back around 1900 - 1910.
Could people do this and pay the foster parent/s for their keep etc?

any info here would be appreciated.

Regards,     Essnell

Hi,

Before I ask,  thanks for any replies in advance.

I would like to know where a person who died in 1890, in Clogheen, Tipperary might have been buried.

I have checked Shanranhan Graveyard on Historical Graves site and they are not on their list .
Where else might I search.
