World War One / War diary look up.
« on: Thursday 22 November 18 11:42 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if I might ask for some info from the war diaries for 4bn,K.L.R. My wife's grandfather was apparently listed as wounded in some way on two separate occasions, round about 20/09/1918 and again c15/10/1918. My basic ancestry subscription doesn't allow me to view this sort of info.

Was it very common for an Irish citizen to enlist in a British regiment?, I have found reference on Familysearch of an ancestor's service records 1917 to 1919.

World War Two / Wellbeck Abbey 1945.
« on: Tuesday 08 May 18 20:12 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can enlighten me as to why my father, after serving for three years eight months in the York & Lancs reg in India/Burma,arrived back home in Dec.1945,only to have been sent to Wellbeck Abbey,Notts, until  being discharged/demobbed in Aug 1946? He enlisted (was conscripted?) in Sep 1940,and was regimental signaller/despatch rider. ( i did ask him about 30 years ago,but for the life of me his response to my question has receded into the furthest depths of my memory...)

Can anyone enlighten me as to exactly how easy it would have been for a man to enlist using a name other than that given at birth,I mean, was it not a requirement to produce official documentation as proof of identity?

World War One / George Wignall- Cameronians
« on: Wednesday 07 February 18 07:25 GMT (UK)  »
I was hoping to discover more about an ancestor in the Scottish Rifles. 40014 Pte George Wignall,1st/8th bn. From what I can tell was on the wounded list published on 09/11/1917. I think they were in Egypt when he died,so am looking to fill out the info I do have, and any assistance would be gratefully accepted.

Dublin / Peter Wall
« on: Thursday 18 January 18 09:49 GMT (UK)  »
I would be grateful for some assistance with the following - I have Peter Wall's (born Dublin c1877) family line, and he is at the family home in Bath Avenue Place,Dublin at the 1901 Irish census, but there is a possibility that he may have wound up in the workhouse at some point. I have drawn a blank for the 1911 census, and while most of his siblings settled in Garston,Lancs, I can't find him there either. How would I go about looking at the workhouse idea in Dublin?? Any offers of help would be appreciated.
