I bought a quirky little house in Stanley, Durham last year. Since buying the house i have desperately been trying to trace its history but to no avail. It was built about 1899 and I believe it was built for the manager of a quarry that it overlooked. There are 5 houses in my little road and then there are another four rows of 5 houses behind ours. The houses are built from stone that was drawn from the quarry and that is all I know. I can find no reference to any stone quarries in Stanley but my biggest problem is that I dont think our road name has always been the same and I also suspect that back in 1901ish the area was classed as either Tanfield or Oxhill. If any one has any info regarding when Stanley came to be, road names, info on the quarry etc it would be really appreciated. I know you normally get posts on here about people but my little house is lovely and I would love to know its history and the history of the area. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.
