Dumfriesshire / William McKie
« on: Wednesday 30 October 19 17:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out some information on William McKie ( 1772-1838)  He was born at Terreglestown in 1772 and died in Dumfries in 1838. He was Provost from 1827-1829 and is described as a manufacturer at this marriage in 1814. I am anxious to discover what in fact he manufactured as his son William is described as being a manufacturer in Hawick and I wondered if this was the same business. I believe he lived at Moat House in Townhead Street ( Now Academy Street)  at the time of his death. The house was later demolished in the 1960's and a gym hall built in its place for the use of the adjoining school

This is most interesting.. Have you any idea when the Scotts lived at Barnbarroch and for how long? Charles lived at Woodbank Dumfries lateron before becoming bankrupt and being exiled to Australia where he died on 1898.

I am doing research into the Scott Family who were instrumental in establishing the Tweed Industry in Dumfries. I am having some difficulty in establishing the position regarding Charles Walker Scott. I know that he was born in Manchester about 1845 and married Mary Lorimer in Dumfries in1869. He lived at Woodbank on the Edinburgh Road Dumfries and appears on the 1871 census at that address. However he does not appear to be on the 1881 or 1891 census. He is recorded as withdrawing from the partnership of Walter Scott and Sons on the 12th June 1895 and he died in Australia on the 27th September 1898 .If anyone can shed any light on the missing period from 1871 -1895 it  would be greatly appreciated

Trying to trace information on Archibald Smith believed to have lived at 24 Ferrier Street Glasgow and have been a flower salesman. Killed in an accident about 1964-65. He also lived at Maryhill and Yoker at some time.

I am doing research into the Scott family who were pioneers of Tweed Manufacture in Dumfries Scotland.

One of the family was exiled from Dumfries and sent to Australia as a " remittance man" with an allowance of £1500 per year.. He went in the 1890's and died at Manly, Northern Beaches Council , New South Wales on the 23/9/1898. I wondered if anyone has any information on him as he seems to have vanished or been deliberately written out of the family records.

Robert Scott was born in Dumfries but when he got married in Dumfries in 1804 the papers referred to him and his future wife as coming from Manchester. Walter Scott was born in Dumfries but when he came to the town in 1857 again he was referred as coming from Manchester.

The information on Walter Scott and family is most helpful.  He died in 1899 aged 79 which suggests that the date of birth of 1816 is incorrect and bears out the other facts. I had some problem with his wife but this was resolved when I found out that his first wife had died and he remarried in 1863. Many thanks for this useful information

Lancashire / Walter Scott

I am trying to find information on Walter Scott born Dumfries 1816 and apparently went to work in Manchester before returning to Dumfries to build a tweed factory in 1857. I think that he might have worked for, or with family members, in textiles but have no evidence. His father Robert Scott born 1780 also went to Manchester and returned to Dumfries to set up a hosiery business in 1810. likewise I have no information on his missing years . Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
