Kent / Re: thomas and sarah rolfe
« on: Sunday 13 January 13 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
i think this may be a different thomas to mine, i have the 51 census which shows sarah living with son thomas and his wife hannah ( foreman).this gives her birth at about 1778. there is a death of a sarah rolfe in 3rd qtr 1852 in elham, which may be her. thomas, the son died in 61 and his wife hannah in 62. sarah's husband thomas is the elusive one, if it wasn't for thomas's marriage cert. i was thinking he may have been illegitimate, obviously wrong, as the 51 census also gives sarah as a widow.

hello cas,
thanks for replying, forgot all about the restrictions on newbie's messaging service, thanks for the reminder. i do have what i believe to be thomas's marriage, in 1840 to a hannah foreman, gives his father as thomas also. had a quick look at the baptism above, looks promising so i will look into it further.
thanks again

Cambridgeshire / Re: cherry hinton and downham church info
« on: Tuesday 06 November 12 14:33 GMT (UK)  »
hi and thanks,
i know the feeling, i spent a whole day at a large graveyard once and like you, knew they were there, but never found them, though, i have had successes at other graveyards, and it is a nice experience when you actually come across them.fortunately, i have to go to cambridge on another matter for a few days so i don't mind spending an afternoon or so looking these up, ( providing the weather holds up)  ;D
thanks for the link, will check it out

Cambridgeshire / cherry hinton and downham church info
« on: Tuesday 06 November 12 12:25 GMT (UK)  »
hi all,
i am hoping to get down to cambridge in a week or so, and am  trying to find out a little info on st. andrews, cherry hinton and st. leonards, downham. had a look at google maps, and they both look quite accessable, is that right?  also do you know if the cemeteries are large? and what condition the gravestones are in?
i have( hopefully) quite a few rellies buried there and am hoping for some photos.
any info at all would be helpful
thanks

Armed Forces / Re: a strange one
« on: Monday 08 October 12 13:48 BST (UK)  »
hi,
you are right, it could be any type of unit, i know i am grasping at thin straws, but just trying to start somewhere.
this guy was there from about 42 till about 47, ( unless he was posted away and then returned ), one reason for assuming it was an army unit, though, as you say to counter that, he may have been on a permanant posting with the likes of the homeguard, etc,
the family story is that he was due to marry a local girl, ( the friend's grandmother ) but his CO put a stop to it by informing her he was already married, this point i have proven as correct. all she had to go on was his name.
just thought, though i know it would be difficult, if not impossible, that if i could find out which units were around the area at the time, would give me at least something to start with.

thanks guys,
as he was a farmer,( always assumed farmers were exempt from being called up) i presume he volunteered, which is why i thought of a local regt.i am not sure if he did serve in the great war, he was of age so may well have done, i know my grandfather lied and enlisted when he was 16. he was back in perth in 1919 where he got married and was down as a ploughman, so would have left the forces straight afterwards if he did serve in it. just wondered if you knew of any scottish unit around the manchester area towards the middle/end of WWII at least it might give me somewhere to start.
