John NODDER was born in 1838 to Thomas (shoemaker, later Postmaster) and Maria in Torpoint. He appears in both the 1841 and 1851 Census transcripts for Torpoint, but he is not there in 1861. He joined the Royal Navy in 1854, becoming carpenter/shipwright, so I suspect he was on a ship somewhere in 1861. I know that crews of ships at sea at the time of the census were enumerated so it should be possible to find some record for him in 1861, but I have so far failed.

Can anyone check the 1861 census naval record and see if John is included there and, if so, what ship he was on. I have until now believed he spent most of his naval career merely maintaining/repairing ships in port at Devonport, so if I could find evidence that he was on the high seas, at least for part of his career, that would be very exciting.

Can anyone make my Christmas?

Thanks

Hello Jan
Thanks for responding. Please bear with a RootsChat newbie! What I'd like to do, somehow, is perhaps to start a new thread, and also to be able to send you an attachment or two but it seems I cannot do this on this 'lookup' variety of thread.

e.g. I would like to be able to send you a will for on Grace Newold and also a tree with, like you, a long string of blacksmith 'George Newells'.

Oddly my father was not only also called George Newell but he was very skilled at welding, metalworking, woodworking etc.

Best regards

Colin Newell.

Hello folks. Back in the 1980s I did a lot of genealogy research into Newell/Newold family in and around Wrestlingworth / Tadlow / Cockayne Hatley etc. It was the days when I knocked on vicars doors and paid £10 into church roof fund to be able to search their registers. I also visited County record offices etc. I have recently started looking at the data again, and entering it into Legacy. I see I have Letitia Newell marrying John Handley. I wonder if you would be prepared to share your early Newell/Newold tree so I can compare with mine which I am happy to share.

Thanks
Colin Newell (ggggrandson of William Muncey Newell c Tadlow 1823)

Anyone interested still in Albert Edward Newell of Tadlow. I'm his grandson, and back in about 1980 spent a lot of time on genealogy of the family. Any details you need?
