Cornwall Lookup Requests / Looking for John NODDER of Torpoint - Does he have a Navy 1861 census record?
« on: Monday 10 December 18 13:07 GMT (UK) »
John NODDER was born in 1838 to Thomas (shoemaker, later Postmaster) and Maria in Torpoint. He appears in both the 1841 and 1851 Census transcripts for Torpoint, but he is not there in 1861. He joined the Royal Navy in 1854, becoming carpenter/shipwright, so I suspect he was on a ship somewhere in 1861. I know that crews of ships at sea at the time of the census were enumerated so it should be possible to find some record for him in 1861, but I have so far failed.
Can anyone check the 1861 census naval record and see if John is included there and, if so, what ship he was on. I have until now believed he spent most of his naval career merely maintaining/repairing ships in port at Devonport, so if I could find evidence that he was on the high seas, at least for part of his career, that would be very exciting.
Can anyone make my Christmas?
Thanks
