I have some old black and white negatives from 1969. I have used my Epson Stylus Office to scan them, but have found that there is what appears to be dust or markings on the negatives.

Could anyone give me some idea about what to do. Should I take them to the local camera shop, get them printed out, and then attempt to clean them, or try to clean the scanned negatives first.

At this stage I only have the Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition, which came with a camera I bought years ago.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Durham / Seeking death for Jane Bewick, nee Wilkinson
« on: Tuesday 21 January 20 05:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the death/burial records for Jane Bewick, nee Wilkinson

I have her baptism 2nd April 1724 at Newcastle on Tyne, at Nicholas Parish Reg and Nonconf , Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, with parents Thomas Wilkinson and Ann Hogget.

I have her marriage to George Bewick 23 July 1746 at Gateshead, Durham.

She has a boy George, born 1746 and a girl, Mary, born 1750, both at Gateshead.

I have a possible record with Durham OPC with her burial in Sunderland in 1803, buried at the Poor house. That is the only record I have found, with the correct name, and a reasonable date. That date would make her about 79.

If anyone can point me in the correct direction, I would be very grateful, as I have tried all the obvious places to search, but have run into a blank.

Australia / Missing Daughter
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 05:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have just worked out that there is a missing daughter to Stephen Robins(Robbins/Robens) and his wife Sarah Catt.
1.   I have Elizabeth Malvina, born 10 Jan 1842
2.   Next is Adeline Charlotte, born 29 Dec 1843
3.   Next is Sophia born in 1848
4.    Then is Eliza Mary Ann born 6 May 1853
5.   Then is Hettie Rhoda born 1858
6   Then is Martha J born 1865
BUT I have a couple of advertisements for the marriage of  Charlotte, THIRD daughter, in 1872, and Eliza Mary Ann, FIFTH daughter.

I have not been able to find any information regarding daughter number two, between Elizabeth Malvina, and Adeline Charlotte.

If any one came point me in the direction of finding out when daughter number two was born, I would be very grateful.

Below are the advertisements regarding the marriages for the two daughters which I have been able to find.

England / 1939 Register - labeled as "Invalid"
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 03:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have one or two people, in separate families, where the wife, or daughter, is under the personal occupation, labeled as "Invalid"

Is there any way of determining what the invalidity might have been, or was it a way of getting rid of awkward questions from the interrogator?

Any information, including negative, will be helpful.

The Common Room / George Holt Probate
« on: Tuesday 24 December 19 00:24 GMT (UK)  »
One of my side branches has George Holt, a school master, who died 19 Dec 1953 in Leeds, Yorkshire. The probate, from the National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966 has the sum of £9947 being paid into The Yorkshire Penny Bank Limited. This is despite having a son and daughter alive at the time. The daughter was a spinster, school teacher, and the son had migrated to Canada. Both are now dead.

I find it most intriguing the probate went to the bank. Any ideas why it would be so would be gratefully accepted.

Sussex / Stephen Robins Baptism
« on: Friday 13 December 19 04:50 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone can assist in helping me find the baptism record for Stephen Robins (Robbins/Robens).

The information I have is that he was born 8 May 1813 at Hastings, Sussex, England. However, I do not have any sources for this information, other than “family legend”

In 1839, he migrated to Australia with his wife Sarah Catt (Cate). He was described as a bricklayer, and she as a laundress. Once here, he did well for himself, and I have good records.

BUT, when and where was he baptised, and if possible when and where was he born.

If anyone can point me to where I can find this information, I would be very grateful

Cornwall / Abraham Stevens, when did he die?
« on: Thursday 28 November 19 01:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have Abraham Stevens, born 1768 in Cornwall, baptised 20 November 1768 at St. Hilary.

He married Elenor King 15 November 1794 at Germoe, Cornwall.

I have two records for Abraham Stevens death, but which is the correct one?

One is at Phillack 10 April 1825 aged 58. That could be correct, but I also have his death at Phillack 12 December 1834, with no age recorded.

I am leaning to the 1825 date, but would like confirmation to make sure.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Cheshire / Seeking help re two baptisms for the same name.
« on: Saturday 21 September 19 05:20 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor, John Farr, born in 1759 at Haslington Cheshire.

I have a baptism for him on 17 June 1759 at Haslington, with father named as Thomas.
Event:      Christening
Event Date:   17 Jun 1759
Event Place:   Haslington, Cheshire
Name:      John Far
Father:      Thos. Far
Film Number:   2186911
Digital Folder No    4019282
Image Number   178
As per Family Search

I have also found a baptism for John Farr on 29 July 1759 at Manchester.
Name:    John Farr
Event Type:    Baptism
Baptism Date:    29 Jul 1759
Parish:    Manchester, St Mary, St Denys and St George
Father's name:    Thos Farr
Archive Roll:    748
in the Manchester, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1573-1812 (Cathedral) on Ancestry.

Is it possible for Thomas to have taken John from Haslington to Manchester some six weeks later for another baptism, or is it just a cast of two fathers naming their sons John, with the births being about the same time.

At this time I have only the baptism and marriage of John Farr, and nothing about Thomas to go on to find out if they are the same or not.

Any assistance would be very gratefully accepted.
