It should be possible to borrow the book via the inter-library loan scheme, though I've found it can take a while for books to appear.

HE is an accepted abbreviation for High Explosive

Hi Alison

Had a couple of hours or so to spare this morning so thought I'd go and have a look in the churchyards at Carnsford and Bruisyard and see if I could find anything of use to you.

I regret to say that I drew a blank at both churches. I didn't see a Baker mentioned at either

Both churchyards are somewhat overgrown and this morning they were distinctly damp and the light was none too good. The older memorials  have lots of lichen growing on them. Not really the ideal conditions for tomb seeking!

I don't suppose you have any idea of the location of the memorials do you?  Do you know the trade or profession of these 2 Simons? Are they likely to have to have had memorials?

Let me have any  additional information you have which might be of use and I'll have another look for you when I'm passing by. I'll try and get my daughter to come with me, she seems to be lucky/skilled at finding tombstones.

Pete

Hi Anne

Thanks for your post which I've only just seen as I've been away for a couple of weeks.

There isn'y a lot to go on from the lists of children from the two familes you found I'm afraid.

If anything the second with wife Elizabeth Martin might be slightly more likely in that my Robert had children Margaret, Mary and Elizabeth which are common in the two list you sent but also a James, which name continues in use to this day.

Roberts wife was also of Scots descent which probably explains where the Gordon and Douglases common later in the family come from.

Many thanks for your trouble, any further suggestions welcomed!

Pete

I was querying the relationship between the Genealogy Centre and the Leitrim Family History Society which I now gather is part of a national organisation, having read up on the Genealogy Society.

I am interested as one of my relations, a genealogical mentor, was very scathing of the Genealogy Centre and their costs and advised me to go to Dublin and do my own research! I have had similar comments from others.

Yes the Chilean red is very pleasant, I've never got into whites I'm afraid, my daughter tells me it's my coarse taste buds!

Just been to Australia via the web looking up Pambula and Baddeley!

Kind regards

Pete

Is the old red wine having an effect or an I being dense - what is the relationship to the Genealogy Centre and the Family History Society?

Hi!

What an interesting topic. I haven't gone to the start but wondere if anyone plans to analyse the replies as 2 choices on the poll seems a bit limiting given Ireland and Scotland come close  second through the pages I've skimmed.

For my twopenneth

England - Father Derbyshire and W Yorkshire
Ireland - Mother Co Leitrim

Ex wife - the interesting bit - Much of S England, Argentina & Uruguay, Latvia, S Africa, New Zealand and Australia.

The world's my oyster or something!

Thanks Mike

Just back from a meeting where I was the only one who turned up!

Looks like a very good fit to me!

Absence of Charles is interesting, there's always been a bit of doubt about him. Perhaps he was someone elses child.

Pleased to get a home location and trade as somewhere to proceed from.

Thanks once again

Pete

Hi Mike

Thanks for your response. I've never asked for a lookup from the 1841 census before and it was only after I'd posted I read the instructions and found London and a variety of other towns need an address for searching, which of course I haven't got!!

The information  I have comes from a Family Book pre 1920s.

Names I have for children are

Mary Ann b abt 1824
Eliza         b abt 1825
Louisa      b abt 1830
Charles     b abt 1832
Emma       b abt 1833
John         b abt 1834

Hope you can get somewhere with these!

Many thanks

Pete

I wonder please if someone would be good enough to search out details in the 1841  census for  John Perkins and his wife Mary Ann (Baddeley). They were married 7 April 1823 at Old Church, St Pancras.

They had 6? children between 1824 and 1834 christened at Litle Chapel St Independant Westminster and St Andrew's Holborn.

It is possible that Mary Ann had died by 1841 but I haven't found the record if she had.

Many thanks
