Kent / Cornhills of Faversham
« on: Saturday 21 January 06 17:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have an odd problem, involving Kent people who "strayed" to Berkshire and then seemingly came back again.

In 1851 William Cornhill b approx 1826, married to Ann Fowler, was a baker in Oare Street, Oare in Kent. His father was William Cornhill. (He is my gggg-grandfather). In 1851, he had 3 children, William Jnr, Frederick and Eleanor. In later years he sired many, many more!!

In 1851 Joseph Cornhill b approx 1826, married to Sarah, was a baker in Seasalter, Whitstable in Kent. His father was probably also William Cornhill, although this is not confirmed. He has two children by 1851, Joseph and Adelaide.

Both were born in Wokingham, Berkshire. Neither of them appear in the 1841 census in any available county. (I subscribe to The Genealogist, British Origins, Ancestry and Stepping Stones)

In 1851, Thomas Cornhill b 1793 in Faversham was a labourer in Oare Street, Oare. His wife was Susannah.  They had children including another William, Mary, Susannah, all born in Sheerness, and Thomas born in Oare. Thomas was the only one still at home in 1851. Susannah had married William Honess prior to 1841.

In 1847, my gggg-grandfather William Cornhill the baker married Ann Fowler in Oare, and his witness at his wedding was Susannah Honess, the daughter of Thomas and Susannah Cornhill of Oare. His father was given as William Cornhill deceased. The indication is that Susannah was his cousin.

In 1840 a William Cornhill (perhaps Wm Cornhill Snr) died in Faversham. (Certificate sent for)

In 1843  a Martha Cornhill, born about 1805 in Wokingham, married William Baker in Faversham. (Certificate sent for). I suspect this is the widowed mother of William and Joseph - the marriage cert should give her maiden name as well as confirming that she was a widow.

However, in the 1841 census, like her two putative sons, Martha Cornhill does not appear in any available county.

In Wokingham, a Richard Cornhill died in 1840 (Certificate sent for).

So we have a story - perhaps - about a Cornhill family in the Faversham region. Two sons were born, Thomas and William. Thomas stayed at home whilst William went off roaming, ending up in Wokingham, Berks, where he probably married a Martha. They had at least two children, William and Joseph, and may have had two daughters named Elizabeth and Adelaide. They could aslo have had a son named Richard. There are no established Cornhill families in Berkshire at all.

Adelaide and Elizabeth Cornhill were both born in Wokingham, in about 1830 and 1834 respectively, and appear to have remained in Berkshire.

In 1841 an Elizabeth Cornhill is in the Wokingham Union Workhouse aged 6. In 1851 she is a prisoner in Reading Gaol. By 1861 she is working as a servant in Coulsdon, Surrey.

In 1851 Adelaide is working as a servant in Mistley, Berks. She does not appear in the 1841 census.

So if William Cornhill who died in Faversham in 1840  is William Cornhill Snr, then where were his widow and his two sons (Joseph and William) and possibly a daughter (Adelaide)  in 1841? They all appear in 1851, but in 1841 there is no sign of them at all. I have tried every possible combination of names and dates - and have even gone to the extent of looking them up by first name alone.

Does anyone who might also be researching Cornhills have any ideas?

Berkshire / Cornhills of Wokingham
« on: Friday 20 January 06 09:59 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking information about two men - whom I presume are brothers:

Joseph Cornhill, born around 1825
William Cornhill, born around 1826

Both give their birthplace in the 1851 census of Kent as Wokingham, Berks.

In 1851, Joseph was in Seasalter, Whitstable, as a baker, and William was a baker in Oare.

I cannot trace either of them in 1841.

William Cornhill's marriage certificate in 1847 gives his father as William Cornhill (deceased)

Contemporary with William Cornhill Snr is a Thomas Cornhill  of Oare, (born Faversham) a general labourer in 1851, who had children named Susannah and William. Susannah was witness at the wedding of William Cornhill Jnr in 1847. So they are likely to be related - perhaps cousins.

Any help anyone can give me in finding the births or baptisms of Joseph and William in Wokingham will be very welcome!

Norfolk / Robert PHENIX/PHOENIX - Saham Toney/Kings Lynn
« on: Saturday 14 January 06 18:52 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking Robert Phenix or Phoenix in Norfolk born  around 1780-1790. A bpatism or marriage would be wonderful!

According to the IGI, his wife was Sarah Crenwall (?? could be a mistranscription) and they would have married some time prior to 1811.

He and Sarah had two children baptised in Saham Toney: Martha in 1811 and George b 1814.

They then moved, and had more children, two of which were born in Kings Lynn: Sarrah b 1825 and William b 1828.

In the 1841 census Robert is already gone (dead?).

In 1841, Sarah is a butcher in Pilot St, Kings Lynn, living with her two sons. Daughter Martha had already married John Utton in South Lynn in 1833.

In 1851 George is listed as the butcher, with Willaim and Sarah living with him

In 1861 Sarah is living alone, aged 77,  with a couple of lodgers, as a recipient of parish relief.

Neither William or George seem to be on the scene in 1861. A George Phenix died in Kings Lynn in 1850 according to Free BMD. No trace of William.

Anyone have any ideas? I am completely stuck!

Additionally, any further information about John Utton (Hutton), a saw setter born about 1811 in Helhoughton, would be welcome.

Fingers croseed..... ;)

Suffolk / SMITHS of Gazeley
« on: Thursday 12 January 06 18:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking marriage and parentage data for William Smith, born about 1777, perhaps in Gazeley.

He married an Elizabeth - surname and place unknown - and his children were baptised from 1804 onwards in Burrough Green, Cambs, and from 1814 onwards at Westley Waterless. (Cambs FHS Baptism index and the IGI).

His children include Susan, Sarah, Ann, Eilzabeth and Rhoda in B/Green, and Elizabeth, Thomas, George, Rhoda and John in W/Waterless. (The first Elizabeth and Rhoda died in infancy).

In 1841 he was back in Burrough Green as head of the family, a widower living with sons John and George and his married daughter Elizabeth and her husband  Thomas Mingay. The return shows him as "born in county".

In 1851 he was still in Burrough Green, with the same sons and daughter, plus a few additional Mingay children. This return shows him as born in Gazeley, Suffolk.

I have checked 1841 and 1851 returns for Gazeley and there are plenty of Smiths there with similar family names. Susan and William in particular are favoured.

By 1861 he appears to have died. I cannot pinppoint hs death with any accuracy as it is such a common name.

If anyone can help with a possible birth/baptism in Gazeley about 1777 and the names of his parents, and/or a marriage to Elizabeth prior to 1804, I should be most grateful.

Cambridgeshire / Cadmans in Isleham
« on: Sunday 11 December 05 12:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have traced my father's ancestry back to Isleham in Cambs but have reached a brick wall which I hope someone might be able to help with.

I have a direct ancestor named John Cadman - b Isleham about 1798 (date from various census records so not set in stone) who married Ruth Johnson - b Isleham in 1797 - on 5 Oct 1818 just in time for their daughter Susan's birth in November 1818! Later children were James x 2, Sarah and John. It seems possible that both the first-born James and John died in infancy.

Ruth died in 1829 and in 1830 John Cadman married Ann Thorpe. Their children were John, Mary and George.

I also have another John Cadman, birth date unknown but perhaps between 1760-1770. According to the IGI he married Susanna Pareman on 17 Oct 1789 in Isleham. Their IGI-listed children (plus their christening dates) were Mary 1790, Susanna 1792, Susan 1795, Elizabeth 1802, Sarah 1802 and James 1804.

I believe this second John Cadman might be the father of John Cadman 1798. The family names are all quite common ones, but there is a strong correlation between them, particularly the Susans and Susannas.  There is also a very suitable gap in the production of children between Susan in 1795 and Elizabeth in 1802 where John 1798 would fit very nicely!

Anyone have any ideas or information that might help me prove/disprove  the link?

I also have Isleham Cadman's in another line deriving from my father - yet another John Cadman - b about 1780, son of Thomas Cadman and Honor. He married Elizabeth and produced a daughter Martha Cadman in 1799.  This John Cadman's great-granddaughter Martha Leonard married John Cadman King who was the grandson of John Cadman 1798.

Essex / ABBOTT and COLEMAN and MONTEITH in Witham
« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 12:59 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the marriage of Henry Abbott/Abbit and Mary Coleman in Witham in late 1773.

Their son Thomas Abbit (b 1777, Witham) married Esther Monteith (b 1798, Witham) before 1837.

I can trace no Monteiths in Witham in the census records from 1851 onwards, although I know of two female Monteiths - Mary & Hannah Maria - born there in 1808 and 1831 respectively.

Any information re: Henry, Thomas or Esther gratefully received!
