Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Unexpected number of cMs of DNA matches
« on: Thursday 28 December 23 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
Didn't know about the unweighted data (thank you!) so I've just tried that out: the first one I tried had 18 cM unweighted for me, 27 for my daughter. Second one from another group: 23 and 29 cM respectively. I suppose what I'm asking is, is that a statistically significant difference?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Unexpected number of cMs of DNA matches
« on: Thursday 28 December 23 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
My daughter and I have both done the Ancestry DNA test. Needless to say we share many DNA matches, but what is unexpected is that the number of cM for those matches is often more for my daughter than for me. I would have expected (maybe naively) that the number of cMs matched would be either the same as for me, or less. The result has been that where I have sorted the matches into groups on the basis of their shared matches, it is sometimes the case that there are several members of the group that have shown up on her list but not on mine as presumably they are below the 8cM limit for me.

Is this just down to random errors? Does anyone know what the error bar is on DNA matches? Is this a common state of affairs? Or is my test somehow flawed?

That would make sense. It also appears that he went to New York in 1893 with his brother Mark.

I have an interest in this family, and according to the certificate I've downloaded, King George Eastwood married Susannah Smith at St. Paul's church in Bury on 26 Nov 1867. I'd be interested to know what you know of them. How did he come to die in Smolensk in 1905?

Worcestershire / Re: Two vanishing families from Abberley

Thank you very much Miriam! I knew I could count on somebody on here to find them.

It looks as though Alfred Bell must have been made of more adventurous stuff than the rest of my family, most of whom never ventured more than about 10 miles in any direction over the last 200 years. I shall have to see if I can trace any descendants of Olive...

Lots of intriguing questions there though... on the immigration record it lists their last place of residence as Dundee, Scotland (!) and Alfred must have gone separately because there's only Amelia, Olive and another daughter I wasn't aware of.

Worcestershire / Two vanishing families from Abberley
« on: Friday 08 August 14 15:07 BST (UK)  »
I thought I'd throw these two little mini brick walls open for suggestions. They both involve members of the Morris family of Abberley.

1. Amelia Hope was b. Abberley in 1872, the daughter of Charles Hope and Sarah (nee Morris). In 1890 Amelia married Alfred James Bell and they had a daughter Olive Silvia Bell. In the 1891 census they are in East Street, Kidderminster with Alfred's father James Bell. And after that I can't find any trace of them at all - does anybody know where they went?

2. Alfred Mills married Louisa Beard in 1865 and a year later they had a daughter, Isabella L. Mills in Worcester. In 1868 Louisa died and Alfred then married Ellen Morris in Abberley in May 1870. By the 1871 census they have a son John and the four of them are living at Shelsley Walsh. And then they vanish completely as well.

All suggestions gratefully received!

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Re: insull insoll hartlebury

I've got lots of Insulls from Hartlebury in my tree, but not these, I'm afraid! Mine all descend from Samuel Insull (or Insol) who married Sarah Allen in Elmley Lovett in April 1821, then had (we think) 8 children in Hartlebury, from William in 1826 (though we're not absolutely certain about him because he's the only one not listed on the IGI, just 90% certain) to Maria in 1841. They did however include a John Insull b. 1835.

Worcestershire / Re: Betsy Oakey (x2): where did they go?

Yes, the age of that death looks slightly out. I've been looking for any sign of the marriage of Betsy Oakey to William Marsh and haven't come up with anything yet. Maybe since they'd gone to a different part of the country they didn't feel the need to bother.

Looks as though my previous inability to find them has been down to them not being able to stick to one form of the name Elizabeth, and Emily being (very) conservative with her age - she only ages 18 years or so in the 40 years of censuses!
