Kent / Chatham Union Workhouse
« on: Saturday 09 June 07 17:03 BST (UK)  »
I just wanted to mention that I recently purchased the death record for my g-g-grandmother and it shows that she died in 1894 in the Union Workhouse in Chatham.

According to their website, the Medway Archives has records from that workhouse, so I emailed them, and received a prompt reply stating that the archivist had found the entrance and death records for my g-g-grandmother.  I have sent the fee to purchase print-outs and hope that they will contain some useful information.

Does anyone have easy access to baptisms in Whitechapel circa 1845-1848?

If you do, would you please look up Sarah Pope for me?  (My g-g-grandmother.)

According to her marriage record (in 1868), her father was Robert Pope, a labourer.  He wasn't listed as deceased.  Sarah was 23 in 1871 and 36 in 1881 and supposedly born in Whitechapel.

I purchased the birth record for a Sarah Pope who was born 14 August 1845 on Buckle Street in Whitechapel; parents were William Pope, coachman, and Sarah Pope formerly Surridge.  This is the wrong Sarah Pope.  I followed her family forward in the census (1851 & up) and that Sarah seems to have died prior to the 1851 census.

I can't find a Sarah Pope to match mine in 1851 or 1861.

Thanks for any help!

Josephine

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Please help me find my elusive Georges!
« on: Wednesday 30 May 07 01:41 BST (UK)  »
Folks,

I wonder if you might be able to find my elusive George family in 1891 & 1901?  I'd really appreciate any help!  I feel quite discouraged by this group (to put it mildly).

I think this is them in 1871:

1871 Census
Mile End Old Town, Middlesex

William George, head, married, 25, porter, born Bishopsgate, Middlesex
Sarah George, wife, married, 23, born Whitechapel, Middlesex
Sarah George, daughter, 3, born Mile End New Town, Middlesex
Elizabeth George, daughter, 1, born Mile End New Town, Middlesex
Mary Ann George, daughter, 17, born Mile End New Town, Middlesex  [she's too old to be their daughter]

I'm pretty sure this is them in 1881:

1881 Census
Bethnal Green, Middlesex

William George, head, married, 38, poultry porter, born Bishopsgate, Middlesex
Sarah George, wife, married, 36, born Whitechapel, Middlesex
Annie George, daughter, 7, born Whitechapel, Middlesex
Jane George, daughter, 4, born Whitechapel, Middlesex
Henry George, son, 1, born Whitechapel, Middlesex

William Thomas George died in April 1883 in the Workhouse in Bethnal Green.  I don't know what happened to them as a family after that.  I've searched high and low but to no avail.

1.  Wife Sarah George:

I can't find her in 1891 or 1901.  It's possible that she died or remarried.  I've tried just searching on her first name, birthplace and approximate age (or variations of those) with no success.  I've pretty much given up on ever finding her.  She wasn't listed with a middle name in her marriage record or in her son Henry's birth record.  I can't find an obvious fit in the death index on FreeBMD and none of the marriages I've seen in the index match up on the census.

2.  Daughter Sarah Ann George, born about 1868:

I can't find her in 1881, unless she was mistranscribed as 7-year-old Annie (it's possible).  She was married by 1891 (Bertrand) & 1901 (Regelous); I've got her in those.  In 1891 & 1901, her birthplace was listed as Bethnal Green.

3.  Daughter Elizabeth George, born about 1870:

Not listed with the family in 1881 and I can't find her elsewhere.  I can't find an obvious match for a death between 1871-1881 but I'm guessing she died.

4.  Daughter Annie George, born about 1874:

I can't find her in 1891 or 1901.  It's possible that this is actually daughter Sarah Ann, who was born about 1868, and that the census man mistook 12 or 13 for 7.  I can't find any clear matches in the death index.   If she didn't die, she might have been married by 1901, but I don't see any marriages in Bethnal Green and that's most likely where she would have tied the knot.

5.  Daughter Jane George, born about 1877:

I can't find her in 1891.  I think she married in 1898; if I've got the right girl on the marriage record, then I've got her in 1901 (Gazzard).  She might have died shortly after the 1901 census was taken.

6.  Son Henry George, born August 1879 in Bethnal Green (my great-grandfather):

I can't find him in 1891 or 1901.  He was married in December 1901 in Bethnal Green; I checked the address he gave and he wasn't living there at the time of the census.  He married Amelia Parker, who was born in 1881 in Chatham, Kent.  I can't find her in 1901, either.  I don't know how or where they met.  Although the 1881 census says he was born in  Whitechapel, he was actually born in Bethnal Green.

It's possible that the family split up when the father died in 1883.  Perhaps mother Sarah, if she was alive, and children Henry and Jane, are listed only by their initials in a workhouse somewhere.  I would expect to be able to find Henry in 1901, though, and his soon-to-be-bride, Amelia Parker (who was also called Millie or Milly).

Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to read this and to anyone who also tries to find them.  I'm not overly optimistic and I don't want to waste anyone's time but I do appreciate any effort in case it is possible to find these elusive Georges.

Regards,
Josephine

Census and Resource Discussion / Born in Not, Kewon
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 23:49 BST (UK)  »
Folks,

I've been searching through the 1891 census index (for the millionth time) looking for my great-grandfather (still to no avail).

One of the entries (not him), lists a person's birthplace as "Not, Kewon".  Looking at the image, I'm pretty sure it says "Not Known".

I'm sure this has been mentioned many times but, if you can't find someone in the census and you know s/he has to be there, leave as many boxes blank as possible.  I always start very specific and, if I don't find the person, start clearing out criteria, one at a time.

Unfortunately, I still have several people that I can't find in various years!   ???

Josephine

Folks,

I am going nuts because I am not able to view any records at:

www.novascotiagenealogy.com

Their viewer software doesn't work on any of our Macs or our one PC.  I've emailed them and the software provider but they can't do anything.  (The joys of owning older computers, boo hoo.)

I've waited so long for this info to be online and now I can't view the darned records.

Can anyone help with some look-ups for me, please?

And can anyone tell me if the documents can be saved to one's hard drive for future reference or if they can only be printed?

Many thanks!
Josephine

Gloucestershire / Postcard re Arthur Alfred Weeks b 1 Aug 1895
« on: Tuesday 30 January 07 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
I like postcards with WW1 themes.  I bought one yesterday and noticed that, although there is no stamp or postmark, a name and address are included.

Here's what it says:

No. 2303402
Private Arthur Weeks
104 Company
Namhead Camp
Chudleigh Post Office

I found his World War One Attestation Papers online at ArchiviaNet.  They say, in part:

Arthur Alfred Weeks
No. 2303402
Born:  1 August 1895, Bristol, England
Present address:  Sussex, N.B.  [New Brunswick, Canada]
Mother:  Mrs. Rose Weeks, 2 Ann St., Bristol, England
Occupation:  Axeman
Married:  No

I couldn't find a likely match in the 1901 census of England or Canada but that's okay, I don't really need it, since he's not in my family.

The message part of the postcard says:
"November 29
"Well Hattie I am writing to let you know that I have not forgotten you yet so good night for this time write soon for I will be waiting for one."

I'm guessing that it was written by Arthur and sent to Hattie inside an envelope or package.  I'm not aware of Hattie being a man's nickname or being short for Arthur.  I purchased the postcard in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Josephine

If someone is a member of Ancestry.co.uk, can s/he access the personal member trees and even upload a personal member tree to Ancestry that would be accessible to people on Ancestry.com?

Thanks!

I've tried to figure this out by searching online and I'm not having any success.   ???

Would a kind Rootschatter please tell me who to contact about getting a copy of the will of someone who died in Chatham, Kent in 1893?

Thanks so much!

Josephine
