Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1851 Census Edward Elias & Sophia Barnett
« on: Thursday 11 January 07 15:33 GMT (UK)  »
May I request a look-up, please?

My cousin gave me these details from a marriage certificate that he has but he doesn't know if this couple is related to our Barnett family.  I thought that, if I could see them in 1851, perhaps the census record might provide a clue.

16 December 1840
Sun Tavern, Chatham, Kent
Edward Elias Barnett, Ironmonger, 160 High St., High Holborn, London
married
Sophia Magnus, 2 Front Row, Ordnance Place, Chatham

Thank you for any help!

Josephine

Leitrim / Alexander Trotter born circa 1799 in Leitrim
« on: Tuesday 26 December 06 01:06 GMT (UK)  »
Alexander Trotter, born circa 1799 somewhere in County Leitrim, came to Canada about 1827 (via the Canada Company) with his wife Margaret (maiden name unknown), born circa 1799 in Ireland.

With them were sons:
-  Robert Trotter born circa 1820 somewhere in County Leitrim, Ireland
-  William Trotter born circa 1821 somewhere in County Leitrim, Ireland

I don't know  if they had any other children who were born in Ireland.

These children were born in Pittsburgh, Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada:
-  John Trotter born circa 1829
-  Jane Trotter born circa 1834
-  Alexander Trotter born circa 1836
-  Mary Trotter born circa 1840

Alexander and Margaret's grandson, Beecham Trotter, mentioned in his book that the Trotters were from Leitrim.

Seeking any family or info on family who might have stayed in Ireland or emigrated elsewhere.

Thank you!

Tyrone / Thomas Donnell & Mary Ann Bridges of Beragh & Clogherny
« on: Thursday 02 November 06 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, Rootschatters!

I am trying to help a cousin find out more about his Donnell family from County Tyrone and I wonder if you could give us some help and advice?

I’ve suggested that my cousin write to the church in Clogherny (I found the address online).  Is there anything else he can do or anyone else he can contact for help?  We are in Canada.

I’m finding it all bit confusing.  It looks as if there is a 1901 census of Ireland but that it’s not available online anywhere.  Is that correct?  Is it available on disc for sale anywhere?

This is all we know:

My cousin’s great-grandparents:

Thomas Donnell
Mary Ann Bridges

According to the LDS website, they had at least three children:

Jeremiah Donnell
Baptized 23 April 1873
Clogherny By Beragh, Tyrone

Robert Donnell (my cousin’s grandfather)
Born 6 May 1876
Beragh, Tyrone

Eliza Donnell
3 March 1880
Beragh, Tyrone

Robert Donnell came to Canada in 1893 on board The Parisian, which left Londonderry, Ireland on 14 July and arrived in Quebec on 31 July.  He is the only Donnell listed on that journey.

Robert Donnell got married in Canada; his marriage record lists his parents as above.  According to the 1911 census, he was Anglican.  We have his marriage record and the birth records for most of his children (in Canada), and we have him in the Canadian census in 1901 and 1911.  Unfortunately, he didn’t talk about his family back home in Ireland and there are no letters or other documentation to provide any clues.

Thank you!   :)

My great-grandfather's sister was Sarah Ann George.  Her first husband seems to have been Samuel Bertrand.  I've just received confirmation that her second husband was James Henry Regelous.

According to my great-aunt's notes, Sarah Ann (1870-1936) and James Henry Regelous (1876-?) might have had the following children:

James Henry Regelous, born 1901, Bethnal Green
Elizabeth Sarah Regelous, born 1903, Bethnal Green
Harriet Regelous, born 1904, Bethnal Green
Jane Matilda Regelous, born 1906, Bethnal Green
Susannah Matilda Regelous, born 1907, Bethnal Green

I've found their births on FreeBMD but no marriages or deaths prior to 1940 (I'm guessing they haven't been indexed yet).

My great-aunt tried to locate her Regelous cousins in the 1970s but with no luck.  I have a copy of a letter written by Sid Regelous in 1973; it says that James "Jim" Regelous was Sid's father's brother but doesn't name Sid's father.

P.S.  Oops.  I forgot to say that I'm hoping to hear from any descendants or anyone who knows what happened to these folks.

James Henry Regelous, born 1901, might have moved to Chingford at some point.  His sister, Sarah Regelous, born 1903, might have moved in with him after their mother died in 1936.  They might have moved to the Brighton, Sussex area at a later date.

Thanks!

Suffolk / Ann/Hannah ROBERTS bc 1800 Suffolk
« on: Sunday 10 September 06 18:56 BST (UK)  »
Folks,

I would appreciate any help or suggestions you might be able to give me on this.

I’d like to learn about the family of my 4th-great-grandmother, Hannah / Ann Roberts, born about 1800 in Suffolk (possibly Ixworth).  I have no clues about her family of origin, however, and I’m guessing that Roberts was not an uncommon surname.

This is probably more background info than you need.  I hope I’m not confusing the issue.  Here goes.

I finally found my 4th-great-grandmother in the 1871 census and it lists her birthplace as Exmouth, Suffolk.  I was all excited and happy until I checked Genuki and couldn’t find an Exmouth in Suffolk (there is one in Devon).  The closest I could find was Ixworth, so I’m guessing that maybe she wrote down Ixworth and the census guy transcribed it as Exmouth.  Of course, I could be wrong.  Or she could have been born there and baptized elsewhere.

Her maiden name was Hannah Roberts (per her daughter’s birth record).  In 1871, she was listed as Ann Roberts.

I suspect that she was not married to my 4th-great-grandfather, Barnett Barnett.  It looks like he was Jewish and she was Anglican.  Their first child (per the 1841 census) was born about 1826 in Kent (probably Chatham).

I couldn’t find a marriage record for Hannah Roberts and Barnett Barnett in the Anglican parish records online at CityArk.  Barnett Barnett did not convert to Christianity (he was a member of the Chatham Synagogue Hebrew Society while they were married).  It looks as if Hannah did not convert to Judaism (she was buried in the Anglican church cemetery in Chatham while her husband was alive).

She was listed by her maiden name in 1851 (the "housekeeper" living in Barnett Barnett’s household) & 1871 (the "widowed" mother of her unmarried daughter, Rebecca Barnett).  This makes me wonder if they were actually married.  She was listed as Barnett Barnett’s wife on her death record and on their daughter’s birth record.

Anyway, all that to say that there doesn’t seem to be a marriage record that I can consult for her father’s name.  If they weren’t actually married, that might have been a bone of contention for Hannah, and that might explain listing herself by her maiden name sometimes.

The 1841 census (in Chatham, Kent) says Hannah was not born in that county.  In 1851 & 1861, everyone in the household was listed as being born in Chatham, Kent.  Then in 1871 Hannah was living apart from her husband, with one of their daughters, and her birthplace was listed as [the non-existent] Exmouth, Suffolk.

Why does this always happen to me???  (Yes, I’m whining, LOL.  If I don't feel sorry for myself, who will?)

Hannah died in 1872.  Barnett Barnett died sometime after the 1891 census.  I can’t identify him in the death index on FreeBMD or Ancestry, so I can’t order his death record or search for a will (although, since his wife was already dead, it’s doubtful he would have mentioned her father’s name).  Barnett Barnett doesn’t seem to have had any money or property, so it’s unlikely he would have had anything to leave to anyone in his wife’s family.  (I've been told by a cousin that he was not buried in the synagogue cemetery in Chatham, Kent.)

I checked the online index to Pigot’s 1823 – 1824 Directory of Suffolk but there aren’t any Roberts men listed in Ixworth.  If her father was a farmer or a common labourer (assuming he was still alive), he probably wouldn’t have been listed in a directory, anyway.

I don’t know when or why Hannah would have moved from Suffolk to Kent and if it was before or after her marriage.

There aren’t any Roberts relatives listed with Hannah’s family in any of the census years.

I’ve looked at the website with Suffolk gravestone photos but found no clues.

I don’t have access to the census records online so I can’t search for any Roberts living in Chatham in 1851 who were born in Suffolk (on the off chance that that might provide a clue).

Thank you for any help or suggestions you might be able to give me!

Regards,
Josephine

May I request a look-up for the following in the 1891 census, please?

Sarah Ann Bertrand, born about 1870 in Bethnal Green
Husband = Samuel Bertrand, details unknown

According to FreeBMD, they were married January – March 1887 but Sarah Ann was listed with a new husband in 1901, so I don’t know if her first husband (Samuel Bertrand) was still alive in 1891.

They were probably in the Bethnal Green area in 1891 but might have been elsewhere in London.

I don’t know if they had any children.  Sarah didn’t have any with her and her new husband in the 1901 census.

Thank you for any help!

If possible, would someone please look-up the following person / family in 1901 for me?

A family member thinks this is my great-grandfather's sister but we don't have anything other than a name.  I can't find a marriage between a Sarah Ann George and ? Regelous in Bethnal Green on FreeBMD, so I don't even know what her husband's name might have been.

In Bethnal Green, London:
Sarah Ann Regelous, 31, born Bethnal Green, Tailoress

Thank you for any help!

1851 Census:
- Esther or Hester Barnett, born about 1826-1828 in Chatham, Kent
- She wasn’t living with her parents or sister in Chatham; I don’t know where she was.

1861 Census (probably living in Chatham, Kent):
- Esther or Hester Samuel, born about 1826-1828 in Chatham, Kent
- + husband Joseph Samuel, born about 1820 (?) in London
- + children:  possibly Mat?, born about 1856 and Jessie, born 1857 in Chatham, Kent

All I have on the Samuel family is the LDS transcript of the 1881 census:

275 High Street, Chatham, Kent

Joseph Samuel, 61, born London, Clothier
Esther Samuel, 64, born Chatham, Kent
Mat Samuel, 25, born Chatham, Kent
Jessey Samuel, 23, born Chatham, Kent
Esther Samuel, 19, born Chatham, Kent
Ebul Samuel, 17, born Chatham, Kent
Maurice Levi, 5, grandson, born Chatham, Kent

I think this is their marriage on FreeBMD:

Hester Barnett & Joseph Samuel
Married October – December 1855 in London

Many thanks for any help!

The Lighter Side / A cousin found me thanks to Rootschat!
« on: Monday 24 July 06 14:13 BST (UK)  »
Two weeks ago, I received a PM from a new Rootschat member who hadn't posted even once.  We exchanged emails and then spoke on the phone the next day:  he's in England and I'm in Canada.

On a whim, he had decided to do an internet search on our common ancestor:  Barnett Barnett from Chatham, Kent.  Up popped a link to my queries on Rootschat.  He was in a tizzy, trying to figure out how to join and how to send me a message.  He saw that I was offline and assumed I might never receive the message.  He was amazed that I emailed him that night!

It turns out he is descended from a daughter of Barnett Barnett who "disappeared" from my view after the 1841 census.  I didn't know if that daughter had died or gotten married:  all I had for her was a big question mark.

My new-found British cousin left for vacation the day after we spoke and I am eagerly waiting for him to return so we can start swapping documents and data!

Many thanks, Rootschat!

Regards,
Josephine
