If anyone will be visiting the Grange Road Cemetery, next to St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church in Gillingham, would you please do a look-up for me?  Or, if you live in Gillingham, would you phone the cemetery for me?

I know the plot & grave number of my 4th-great-grandfather (info provided by the Medway Council) and I'm guessing (& hoping) that some of his family members were buried with or near him.

Rather than posting every detail here, if someone is willing and able to do this look-up, would you please PM me?

Thanks so much!

The Lighter Side / Who was Alice Maud... COMPLETED THANKS!
« on: Saturday 27 May 06 01:41 BST (UK)  »
Was it just in Medway or were other areas affected by the "Alice Maud" craze in the 1800s?  There are at least three in my extended tree and I am constantly seeing others in the parish registers on CityArk.

Who was Alice Maud and why was she so popular?

; )

Josephine

If anyone has access to an index of baptisms in Stockbury, Kent, would you please look up the following for me?

John Beaumon or Beaumont, born about 1796 in Stockbury.

I don’t know his parents’ names.

Thank you!

The Lighter Side / Direct Line Only vs The Whole Kit ‘n’ Caboodle
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 15:14 BST (UK)  »
How many of you are only interested in your direct line and how many are interested in the entire extended family?  What do you think is representative of amateur family researchers in general?

I started out only interested in finding information related to my direct line (as per the articles I had read) but I couldn’t help but find their siblings, etc., and then I had to follow them down the line.  When I found a marriage, I wanted to find the spouse in prior census years, just to round out the picture.

It’s all fascinating to me but most of the people in my present-day family are only interested in the direct line:  the rest is meaningless to them.  (I don’t mean this as a criticism.)  One brother tells me, "Just print a tree when you’re done and give me a copy."

I think I will eventually post my info online in the hopes of building a more complete family tree.  Some distant cousins might be interested, even if my closer relatives may not be!  ;  )

Years ago, my husband said that I am a "completist" and I think he was right.  If I liked a singer, I wanted all of his/her albums.  I recently became hooked on the TV show "24" and now I want to buy all previous seasons on DVD so I can see them all.  (We’ve just started watching Season 3.)

Josephine

If possible would someone please look up the following for me in 1861 & 1871?  I don't know where they might be.

Edmund Bennett Chapman, born about 1836 in Tonbridge/Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

His wife might be with him in 1871: Hannah Chapman, born about 1836 in Chatham, Kent.

Here’s what I have:

1841 Census:
Edmund Chapman, 4, living with his family in Tonbridge Wells, Kent.

1851 Census:
Edmund Chapman, 13, living with his parents in Tonbridge Wells, Kent, birthplace Tunbridge.

Marriage:  21 November 1858
St. Paul’s Parish Church, Chatham, Kent
Edmund Bennett Chapman, 22, Carpenter
Hannah Barnett, 22

1861 Census:  I couldn’t find Edmund.

1861 Census:
Hannah Chapman, married, is a lodger in her parents’ home in Chatham, Kent.  Her husband isn’t with her and neither are any children they might have had.

April – June 1868:
FreeBMD has a death for a Hannah Chapman, age 35, in Medway registration district, Kent.  I don’t know if this is Edmund’s wife.

1871 Census:  I couldn’t find Hannah or Edmund.  I’ve got Edmund’s father and stepmother living in Gilllingham, Kent, but Edmund isn't with them.

September – December 1879:
FreeBMD has a death for Edmund Bennett Chapman, age 44, in Shoreditch registration district.  I think this must be him.

Thank you for any help you might be able to give me.  (I don’t have a subscription  to www.ancestry.co.uk anymore.)

Josephine

Cheshire / Hollands of Gawsworth
« on: Saturday 15 April 06 20:21 BST (UK)  »
About a year ago, I was in touch with Barbara via this board.  Someone sent her info re. the Holland family of Gawsworth and she was going to share it with me but she couldn't do it then.  I haven't heard from her and her email address must have changed.

Would anyone be willing to send me info on the Hollands of Gawsworth?  I'd be more than happy to pay for any photocopying and mailing costs.

My husband is a Holland.  His line goes like this:

1. Joseph HOLLAND  about 1767 - 1852  [4th-great-grandfather]

2.  Abel HOLLAND  about 1793 - 1873  [3rd-great-grandfather]

3.  Francis HOLLAND  about 1845 - ? [2nd-great-grandfather]

4.  Frank HOLLAND  1875 - ?  [great-grandfather]

5.  Francis William HOLLAND  29 December 1897 - 13 July 1973  [grandfather]

I have them in the census records.

Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give me.

Regards,
Josephine

I don’t know if I’m asking the impossible.  If so, please excuse me!  ; )

I am looking for the Christy / Christie family in 1841.  They should be in Bolton, Lancashire.  They might be in the town of Bolton Le Moors or in Great Bolton.

The family might look like this:

Andrew Christy, head, born about 1799 in Market Drayton, Shropshire, Master Shoemaker
Rachael Christy, wife, born about 1791 in Lancashire
James Christy, son, born about 1825 in Manchester, Lancashire, Shoe Maker
Jane Christy, daughter, born about 1829 in Bolton, Lancashire

The following couple might have been living with them (I think Robert was Andrew’s son):

Robert Christy, born about 1819 in Manchester, Lancashire, Shoe Maker
Elizabeth Christy, wife, born about 1821 in Bolton, Lancashire
Peter Christy, son, born about 1841 in Bolton, Lancashire

(Elizabeth Turner and Robert Christy were married January - March 1839.)

The 1851 census heading says Andrew Christy and family were living in the town of Bolton le moors and the township of Great Bolton (I don’t know how that works out).  It looks like they were at 109 Howel Croft in 1851.  1851 census reference:  H.O. 107 2211, Folio 470, Page 10.

Thank you for your help, if possible!

Kent Lookup Requests / The Chatham Hebrew Society Synagogue Ledger, 1836 – 1865
« on: Wednesday 11 January 06 21:33 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone is researching The Chatham Hebrew Society Synagogue Ledger, 1836 – 1865 at the Medway Archives, would you be willing to keep an eye out for information about my ancestor, Barny Barnett (he was a hatter at the time)?

I have just received a copy of the Michael Jolles publication which lists names and appendices from the ledger.  I have a time frame for Barnett "Barny" Barnett and the references from the Michael Jolles book.

Thank you in advance to anyone who might be able to help me learn more about my Barnett family.  Until now, we never knew that we had any Jewish ancestors.

I live in Canada and it will be years before I can visit England (if ever).

Josephine

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Churches in Hartlip, Kent...Completed Thanks!
« on: Friday 30 December 05 22:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have three family members born about 1824 - 1828 in Hartlip, Kent.

Would someone please tell me where to find info about the churches where they might have been baptised? I've tried Genuki and Google but with no luck.

Their other siblings were born and baptized in Gillingham.

Thank you for your help!
Josephine
