Good luck; I hope you're able to find more on them over time.

Cool!

I'm not related to anyone well-known. Burton Cummings is the spitting image of my father and one of my brothers but, unfortunately for me, we're not related at all.

I say unfortunately because he's massively talented and seems like a smart, funny, interesting person. And also because I'm a big fan of his.

My only suggestion would be to try to find other documentation such as an obit, will or cemetery record, if possible.

As an aside, someone with the surname Boobar married into one of my families about 100 years ago in the US; an online tree has the surname as Bubier and Boobyer in earlier generations. It looks like that family was in Maine as early as the late 1600s. I think it's an unusual surname.

Bear in mind also that obituaries are charged on a per word basis. So the more names the higher the cost. You have to draw the line somewhere!

After my mother-in-law died, my husband's sister wanted to identify me in the obit as a daughter, just to save $$ on a few letters. I put the kibosh on that.

The Common Room / Re: Find My Past -- searching newspapers

The search seems to be bringing up results I had not noticed in the old searches yet the newspapers have been on there some time now, however when I view a scan of the original image I sometimes find the right search result is on the adjacent page to the page I am taken to.

Yes, I've noticed that this seems to be happening more often now.

I'm in contact with FindMyPast about the problems with the new search, specifically the exact keyword search, which doesn't work properly (it says ticking "exact" will combine the keywords into a phrase, but that's not what happens).

I've sent them an example, filtered for one specific year, which returned more than 3,500 'results', none of which appeared to matched the criteria (I didn't check all 3,500, obviously!).  I've just run it again using the old search method and it returns just ONE article.

The initial response seems to be that they are listening, so fingers crossed.

Thanks. I've encountered the same problem. It's not good.

My 4x great grandfather died in Newgate Prison, 18 months into a two year sentence for indecent assault. Frustratingly, the Central Criminal Court Records say no more than that, even though the evidence given in other trials the same day is on record.

It would drive me crazy not to know more. There's nothing in the local newspaper(s)?

One thing that I noticed was that against each result, it gave you the date that that newspaper report / article was added to the database - an un-necessary extra detail?

Yeah, I hate it. I want to skim the results to see the newspaper info but, with the "added to" date now directly underneath, the two lines of data compete with each other and I have to stop and focus to get the info I want from the top line.

I learned that one of my 3x-great-grandfathers was sentenced to 7 years' transportation. Luckily, he was pardoned before they shipped him off, but he spent some time in prison and that can't have been easy.

I also learned that one of my 4x-great-grandfathers was Jewish. No one knew we had any Jewish ancestry in the family.

Another thing I learned: I have a lot of Irish ancestry on my father's side. My grandfather or great-grandfather would have known this but my father and his sibling certainly didn't.

It's amazing how quickly and easily this knowledge is lost.
