Just an FYI, since I've checked: those years aren't available on Newspapers.com or Newspaperarchive.com.

London and Middlesex / Re: Who was Abraham Lewis aka Judah Nathan born c1815 Aldgate?

I think in my original post, I wrote that Abraham/Judah died 16th Jan 1896 .....according to newspaper reports, it was Thursday, 2nd January, 1896.
There is a burial for a Lewis Nathan at Rookwood Cemetery, but the dates are off:
Lewis Nathan
Date of Death: 1 Jan 1895
Date of Burial: 1 Jan 1895
Age: N/A
Plot: OGN_Zone A/16/699
AU / New South Wales / Rookwood Cemetery
I rang the cemetery, it is an unmarked grave and he is the only person buried in the grave. That was the only info the lady on the phone would reveal. The date is out by a year.

Interesting. It does seem likely to be the same man, despite the discrepancy. The attached is a snippet from an article in the Jewish Herald, dated Jan. 24, 1896, which I saw on the Trove website. It refers to him as Lewis (or Judah) Nathan. Here's the link:

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/147276783/17604108

You mentioned that his death was registered under the name Louis Nathan. Do you have a copy of the actual death record? I'm just curious if it contains any useful clues.

Our Jewish ancestors' habit of using more than one set of names certainly complicates things for us.

Do you have a copy of the Rachel Lewis birth record?
I included a transcription of Rachel’s baptism in my last reply. This was before civil registration, so a baptism record is all that will be available.

Yes, I saw the info on her baptism but didn't realize there would be no corresponding birth record. Thank you.

Wow, the article posted by Neale1961 is a great find.

Do you know where Judah Nathan / Abraham Lewis was buried? If there is a burial record on file somewhere, or if someone put up a tombstone for him at some point, one or both might list his father's name.

I'm assuming he didn't have any money or a will at the time of his death. Do you know if his wife Johanna had a will? Do you know where she was buried and have you checked for a burial / cemetery record and tombstone?

Do you have a copy of the Rachel Lewis birth record?

If I'm understanding you correctly, aren't you also a descendant of the Gaze/Shuker marriage?

1. James Gaze & Mary Shuker (m. 1818)
2. Thomas Gaze (d. 1907) & Ellen (?)
3. Charles Gaze & Johanna Jenkins

1. James Gaze & Mary Shuker (m. 1818)
2. Thomas Gaze (d. 1907) & Ellen (?)
3. Dorothy Gaze (Charles's sister) & ?

Is this through your mother's side of the family? If so, I guess it would be down to you, then, to have the DNA testing, but it wouldn't necessarily be conclusive if nothing showed up.

I Googled Shuker surname origins and it's also an English surname, apparently. So it might be just a wild goose chase -- but you might learn something interesting along the way. You never know.
