Nobody in my family knows the identity of the woman in this photo, or the location where it was taken.

The photo is approx 11cm X 8cm and is mounted on a heavy card without any markings to identify the photographer or suggest where or when it might have been taken.

I'd appreciate any suggestions to help date the photo, and to indicate the place it was taken.  I'd also appreciate any more general comments about the circumstances when such a photo might have been taken - any particular event?  It looks to me as if she might be holding a bible.

Various parts of my family lived around Casterton/Kirkby-Lonsdale in Westmorland, and near Barton in Preston and Westby with Plumpton in Lancashire.

Thanks for any suggestions you may be able to offer about date and location.  No need for restoration at this stage.

Regards

Australia / Assisted passengers to Western Australian 1911
« on: Monday 07 March 11 13:25 GMT (UK)  »
My relatives arrived in Fremantle aboard the SS Orontes on 5 September 1911 from London.  I have them on the passenger list, but would like to know if they were assisted passengers.

Seems there are good records for NSW etc, but can't find any for WA.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Lancashire / Help to ID house photo - Birkdale? Barton?
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 22:23 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to identify the location of a house from an undated family photo.  The family lived at Park House Farm, Barton (1881 census), 1 Clifford Road Birkdale (1891 census).  Not sure if the house in the photo is either of these.  I understand the woman in the photo is Margaret Bayley who was born in 1854.

Happy to receive any suggestions.
Tks.

Occupation Interests / Post Office employee records online shortly thru Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 26 January 11 22:26 GMT (UK)  »
Following an enquiry to British Post Office Museum about online records for PO employees, I received the following:

As yet we do not have any of the employment records we hold on line. The website ancestry is working on a project, so that our appointment records will be available on line, through them. Unfortunately, this is not up and running as yet, we were told that it should be finished by early 2011, so it could be up any day now.

There's also a Family History Research Service. For £30, one of the researchers will search the pension and gratuity records and appointment records only.

Westmorland / Property sales 1850s - 1870s
« on: Wednesday 26 January 11 04:33 GMT (UK)  »
I'm interested in trying to find the sale of a farm property in Casterton around 1860.  I don't have any property details, but it's listed in census during 1800s as Town End farm, Casterton.

Can anyone suggest how I might go about checking when it was sold?

Tks

PS: At least part of the property is now Town End Garage, Casterton, surrounded by houses, but I'm not sure when it ceased to be a farm

Presented to Mr Nicholas Bayley by the ratepayers of Casterton and his friends as a token of respect for his valuable services as a public officer for 16 years in that township.  October 1851

This is the inscription on a grandfather clock presented to my great great grandfather.

We have been unable to determine what he might have done for the ratepayers of Casterton to make them so grateful!  In all the documentation I've found, he's listed as a farmer, so I'm not sure what role he might have played in the Casterton community.  His son James is listed as a farm owner in Casterton in 1873 (Return of Owners of Land - Westmorland).

As far As I know, the following info about him is accurate:

Born: 1812 Kirkby-Lonsdale
Death: Unknown
Father: James
Mother: Ann
Living:  Town End Farm, Casterton 1841 (census), 1851 Village of Casterton (census + History & Directory of Westmorland 1851 - owner)
No record in Casterton in 1861 census.

Any suggestions about the clock would be welcome, or any info about Nicholas or his family.

Regards
Fleur

Lancashire / Looking for information about James Bayley
« on: Saturday 22 January 11 12:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have some gaps in the record about James Bayley who was born in Casterton, Westmorland in 1853.  He was a farmer and owned Town End farm in Casterton until at least 1873 (England, Return of Owners of Land 1873).

He had moved, with his wife (Margaret Willan) to ark House Farm, Barton, Preston (1881 census) by the time his first son was born in 1879 and continued farming though it seems he did not own land (listed in census as Farm Bailiff).

** I'm interested to know how and why he came to move from Casterton to Barton, and what might have happened to the family farm in Casterton.

** Another mystery is the fact that he doesn't seem to appear in any census until 1881.

** He's missing again from the 1901 census, by which time, the family had moved to 5 Richmond Road, Birkdale, Lancashire, having also lived at 1 Clifford Road, Birkdale in 1991 (census).

Other details I have:

Born: 1853 at Casterton, Westmorland
Father: Nicholas Bayley (b 1812 at Casterton)
Mother: Mary Bayley (nee Kitchen, b 1824 at Kirkby-Lonsdale
Died: 1902, Ormskirk Lancs

Any suggestions gratefully received.
