I found my Fathers records for the Merchant Navy, and ordered copies, but no luck with my grandfathers.  Perhaps they haven't been transcribed yet

The Common Room / Presumption of Death
« on: Tuesday 01 February 11 08:56 GMT (UK)  »
When my father was four years old, in 1929, my grandfather left him and his mother, and the story I was always told is that he was never heard from again.  I recently obtained my Fathers marriage certificate (1946), and my Grandfather was described on it as "Stoker, Merchant Navy. (Deceased)".  Up until then, I thought I had identified my Grandfather as a man who had died in 1977, and so far have not discovered a record of the death of anybody else of the same name, between 1929 and 1946 (it isn't a common name).
Is it possible that my Grandfather would have been presumed dead, for the purposes of the Marriage certificate.
