Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 census - birkenhead
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 19:37 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the interest Jean - and the ferreting about - I appreciate it!
I have all those census entries, because I - like you - am convinced that there is a connection between the families.
What I had not done before was look for a marriage of William and Susan Owen - so I appreciate that, particularly since I think you are probably right!  I will check the PR next time I go to Manchester Central Library to make sure Susannah's father is James, a shoemaker!!
I think the Mary aged 3 in 1851, daughter of Joshua and Alice is a strong candidate to be my grandfather's mother - in fact, so sure am I that I spent a day in Chester at the Record Office tracing Alice's family through the parish records! Alice I believe to be the daughter of James Jones and Hannah, and I have her in 1841 with these parents and various siblings in Bebington - including a sister, Susannah!  So I think that is another connection between these families.  What I cannot find is any evidence that Mary Naylor - this one or any other! - married a George Owen ... which is what is certainly inferred on my grandfather's birth certificate.
Moving this thread and your subsequent activity has re-awakened interest ... as I have said before, I have spells of activity and spells of doom and gloom.  I will have another rummage around and see if I can find Mary - or others - in 1871 - I have not yet been successful with that!
I have a whole family tree going backwards and forwards for several generations for the Naylor/Jones family to add to mine if only I could prove a connection .....!!
Thanks again for the help

Thanks again Jean - yes all of those threads have been posted over a number of years (!), trying to get to the bottom of this enduring brick wall!  I have flurries of interest every so often, but have never managed to find anything concrete to link the family in Birkenhead in 1861 to my grandfather in Manchester - although I feel pretty certain it is the same ...!!

Thanks Jean!

I think this may be James in 1861
RG9/2643/75/10 - 15 Wilson Street, Birkenhead
but am not sure, and cannot find him - or any of the others for that matter! - in 1871.  I have a feeling that the 1871 information - if I could find them - would give me the key to link James to my family!

This request is actually not completed - I am still trying to track James Naylor through the census returns!  However, I now believe he may have been born c1855 - and I think I may have found him in 1861 - but not in 1871!

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: 1851 Look-up please, Eliza Bowen

There are a number of Elizas of approximately the right sort of age in 1851 in Kent - have you anything to narrow it down; father's name or occupation from her marriage certificate, for example??

Thanks for taking the time and trouble Simon - I do appreciate it.  (Not sure my husband will ....!!!!!)
Goodness knows where this story started, or how "our" William Stevenson earned the right to the board room for that testimonial match ...!!
Grateful thanks and best wishes

Liverpool did have a William Stevenson play for them, but not untill 1962
Simon
Much as I would like it to be - that is much too late for someone born in 1906 ...!!
Maybe he did just play for the reserves - if he played at all.
Maybe it will just be another family myth shot down in flames ......!!
I do appreciate the trouble you are taking ...!

Thanks Simon - I appreciate your time.
This is a real mystery - it is my husband's grandfather, and family folk lore has always said he played for PNE and Liverpool, but he died years ago.  My husband has always accepted the story, particularly since he remembers going to a testimonial at Deepdale as a child with his grandfather and being introduced to Tom Finney!  I thought I would try to find out the facts ..... but it seems there aren't any!!
Thanks for looking!
