Thanks for the interest Jean - and the ferreting about - I appreciate it!
I have all those census entries, because I - like you - am convinced that there is a connection between the families.
What I had not done before was look for a marriage of William and Susan Owen - so I appreciate that, particularly since I think you are probably right! I will check the PR next time I go to Manchester Central Library to make sure Susannah's father is James, a shoemaker!!
I think the Mary aged 3 in 1851, daughter of Joshua and Alice is a strong candidate to be my grandfather's mother - in fact, so sure am I that I spent a day in Chester at the Record Office tracing Alice's family through the parish records! Alice I believe to be the daughter of James Jones and Hannah, and I have her in 1841 with these parents and various siblings in Bebington - including a sister, Susannah! So I think that is another connection between these families. What I cannot find is any evidence that Mary Naylor - this one or any other! - married a George Owen ... which is what is certainly inferred on my grandfather's birth certificate.
Moving this thread and your subsequent activity has re-awakened interest ... as I have said before, I have spells of activity and spells of doom and gloom. I will have another rummage around and see if I can find Mary - or others - in 1871 - I have not yet been successful with that!
I have a whole family tree going backwards and forwards for several generations for the Naylor/Jones family to add to mine if only I could prove a connection .....!!
Thanks again for the help
