Again I think you are right. Do you think the third word listed could be something to do with sharpening knives  ? Thought it begins with Kn ?

I think the word might be knives (i.e. sharpening) and perhaps the little squiggle at the end is 'etc.' or '&c'.

So possibly it is 'coaling, boots, knives etc'  :-\

For future reference the Dictionary of Occupational Terms based on the 1921 census) is well worth bookmarking

Hi , yes This could be right. Thanks. author=Johnsonsyard link=topic=859548.msg7284916#msg7284916 date=1646224236]
What is entered for this chap in the 'relationship' column?
Hi, " odd man " is in the relationship column. I think after WW1 there were not many opportunities for work. Also Robert died not long after with Cancer. He may have had a hard time finding any work. Always been drawn to this ancestor.

I wonder if this refers to Odd Job Man which would fit with Jen's idea of him having 3 different jobs.

I wondered about knives. It definitely starts with a K. The only other word which sprang to mind was knickers which I'm sure is incorrect  ;D

I wonder if the other mystery word(s) before Private might be indoor work.
Wow you are good at this.
Again I think you are right . So we have coaling , boots and possibly " Kniver" or some related word meaning one who sharpens knives. He was working at Harrow school , Newlands school  House . Could be they provider meals for the boarders .Hence the knife sharpening ?

I think perhaps there are three separate jobs in the Personal Occupation column, maybe meant to be separated by commas.

I think the first word is coaling, probably in the sense of filling coal scuttles etc in the school. Boots must mean cleaning boots. The third word seems to start with a ‘k’ but I cant figure it out.
Again I think you are right. Do you think the third word listed could be something to do with sharpening knives  ? Thought it begins with Kn ?

I can still only read the word 'boots' and 'private' I'm afraid.

I think the word 'private' refers back to the instruction about the nature of the employment at the head of the employment column (i.e. working for an employer,  employing persons, or working on their own account). The instructions go on to say:

'For Domestic Servants and others in private personal service write 'Private'.

I think we are actually looking at two column entries here, is that correct?

The first three words are in the 'Personal Occupation' column. The next two words ['something] private' are in the Employment Column.
Well spotted you are quite correct. The first column refers to" something"  boots the second "something" private .
Thanks so much for looking at this. Much appreciated.

What is the column header? Is it asking for his work address?

Just wondering if he listing where he works as a private residence at an intersection of Garrison Rd/St. and ... something that looks like Aldergate?

Hi column header is " occupation and employment " . Thanks for looking. Get the idea he was cleaning boots but the rest of the entry has me baffled.

It seems you already know that he was a boot cleaner at Harrow School in 1921  :-\

Hi attached my great uncles occupation after WW 1 IN 1921. Anyone make this out. Thanks,

Could he have been a private at a coaling boats garrison? http://porttowns.port.ac.uk/the-culture-of-a-victorian-coaling-station/

Hi 👋thanks for reply.  He was working at Harrow School. Before the war in 1911 he was a footman.
