Coroners' Inquests

Requiring no legal or medical knowledge until more recent times, the Coroner was an elected official. Inquests were often held in rooms in pubs. Records of Inquests are fascinating - where they can be found - throwing much light on the way of life and manner of death experienced by our ancestors. The speaker is Dr Kathy Chater.

Brandy For The Parson

We may be a long way from the sea, but did any of your ancestors live on the coast? If so, they may have been involved in some way in the smuggling of contraband. Meryl Catty traces the history and activities of smugglers in their hey-day, and indicates some of the sources available for research.

Yes, that's it, they do appear in some Victorian photos. Your lady is certainly holding something horseshoe-shaped, it's not gloves or a purse.

Exploring Churchyards, The Lost Language of Headstones

Many of us wander around churchyards and cemeteries, tracing family members or just out of interest. This illustrated talk by Kevin Varty explores the sometimes hidden meanings of the symbols which are often carved into the headstones, revealing a lost language from the past. The talk also shows how these symbols have been used by the funeral business, especially during Victorian times.

Maps For Family Historians

Maps are one of the most significant aids when plotting where ancestors lived, particularly in cities. What is available online as well as in record offices will be discussed by speaker Alan Ruston. There are maps that don’t just describe streets and buildings but show the class and even religious nature of the people who lived there. A selection of maps will be available for examination.

Birth And Baptism In The 1800s

Were there stigmas attached to pregnancy, and under what circumstances? How many brides went to the altar expecting more than the banns to have been called?  If death in childbirth or death in childbed are recorded, what was the difference between them? Speaker Tom Doig is expected to enlighten us on matters such as these.
