Coram's Children - The Story of the Foundling Hospital

Jane King will recount the struggle of Thomas Coram at the beginning of the 18th century to establish the Foundling Hospital - Britain's first and only home solely for illegitimate children - and how the babies left there were brought up. Gwyneth will also look at how to use Discovery. Details you may want to remember will be mostly in accompanying notes, so that the slides Gwyneth presents can be used to walk you round the building and show you what some of the documents actually look like and how they can be used to further your research.

He'll begin by tracing how they slowly became a place of punishment, both Corporal and Capital in form, before moving on to the painful conditions in which men and women were kept and how the 'press' was utilised before the reforms of the nineteenth century.
