Cheshire / Re: NIXON family origins
« on: Tuesday 19 February 08 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for your contribution, Brian. Your Nixon family seems to have moved to Cheshire much later than my group, so it doesn't look like a connection. Unless your Oswald's parents moved to Barnsley from Cheshire of course.
With it being a borders name, the Nixons seem to have moved about all over the place.
                      Best wishes and good hunting

Thanks for your thoughts, mishcat. There seems to have been a lot of to-ing and fro-ing of populations between Ireland and Scotland, so it's difficult to sort out what came first!
I am no further on with my Nixon family than I was when I began this thread, so if anyone else has any comments I would be glad to hear them.

The Common Room / Re: The Sad Passing of PeterBennett (M)
« on: Wednesday 12 December 07 17:29 GMT (UK)  »
So very sorry to hear this sad news, and I send my condolences to his family.
As so many people have said before, Peter was a true genealogical gentleman, a respected helper, member and moderator on this site.
He helped me a great deal with my Cheshire ancestors, and was always patient and understanding of my ignorance when I was a newbie -- and afterwards too, if the truth be told.
He will have broken down all his brick walls
        Rest peacefully....

Redkop, Manchester Central Library hold some records for the New Bailey Prison.
You can read a bit about them here :--

Eric, I should point out that the Guardian archive free 24 hour access offer is just for the month of November, so don't miss it! Only five days to go!

The Lighter Side / Re: Captain Cook - the story
« on: Tuesday 20 November 07 15:17 GMT (UK)  »
There was a series called The Ship on BBC Prime last year, which was a documentary of the voyage of a replica of Cook's ship.
The story of the present day crew's efforts to sail an 18th century vessel was intercut with scenes from Cook's voyage
I didn't realise that Captain Bligh of Mutiny of the Bounty fame was there when Cook was killed by islanders.
   Another Bounty connection-
Cook's botanist on board the Endeavor was Joseph Banks, who, as Sir Joseph Banks of Kew  commissioned the Bounty voyage to take breadfruit from Tahiti to the West Indies
