World War Two / Why Territorial Army?
« on: Saturday 22 July 23 14:10 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could explain to me why the 31st (City of London Regiment) Anti Aircraft Battalion Royal Engineers (TA) was TA, eventually becoming the 123rd (City of London Rifles) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA (TA).  My Uncle joined in March 1938, aged 16.

I've been told by the family he was not in the Territorial Army?  But of course his papers say otherwise.  I can't find anything online that explains why the Battalion was designated TA.

I'd like to be able to explain clearly why it says TA.

Thank you!

World War Two / Re: Help deciphering WW2 Svs Record

Hi

I have another query re this Uncle, Martin Loftus, who was maintaining/repairing radar equipment during WW2.

He was in REME and attached to No.5 Central Workshop in Old Dalby in 1943/44.  His Service Trade as Tel./Mech. (HAA) II.

He is listed with being attached to No.5 Central W/S but the papers then mentions the W/S is in No.7 Battalion REME.

I can't find any mention of a No.7 Battalion and wonder if anyone can tell me about it or point me in the right direction?

Couple of Martin's papers attached.

This has been really helpful Andy, thanks so much!

I found this as well.  Just in case it's of use to anyone else.

I would be grateful for a bit of help in working out the chain of command (if that's what it is called) for Operation Crusader in North Africa Nov-Dec 1941. (re 8 RTR)

I'm confusing myself and Googling seems to throw up different explanations.

Is this correct?

8th Royal Tank Regiment was part of 1st Armoured Tank Brigade

The 1st Armoured Tank Brigade was part of 13 Corps

13 Corps, together with 30 Corps made up the 8th Army?

Where does the 7th Armoured Division fit in with above, if at all?

Have I missed anything out?

Thank you!

Thanks Andy, great information.  I'd like to find out the location of the CCS or Field Hospital that would have covered the 1st Army Tank Brigade or better, 13 Corps during 22-14 Dec specifically.  Hopefully someone might have this info - worth a try!

I can't find anything online on how the many wounded were looked after, as yet anyway.

Thanks again!

World War Two / 1941 Operation Crusader wounded - Casualty Clearing Stations
« on: Sunday 25 June 23 17:01 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone kindly tell me where it is most likely a wounded man from 8th Royal Tank Regiment as part of 13 Corps and 1st Armoured Division might have been taken?  Looking at 8th December 1941.

Was there a CCS?  If so where?
Would he have been sent to a Hospital ship or back to Alexandria?

Would be great to get an idea of what happened.

Many thanks.

Bill’s papers mention 2nd Echelon from July 1941 to May 1942. Is that relevant to Squadron/where he might have been fighting?

Thank you!

Is there any way of finding out what Squadron in 8th RTR Bill Loftus was in during 1941 and 1942?

The book 'Armoured Odyssey', refers mainly to B Squadron and Richard Smith's 8th RTR WW2 History refers also to an A and C squadron.

May not be possible but I wanted to ask.  Many thanks!
