Stirlingshire / Re: Stirling Maternity Home, 1958

Monica - Many thanks for the link - a very interesting site.

For the purpose of birth certificates I would have thought the birth place would have been more specific! "Maternity Home, Stirling" is a little vague.

I think I can make out the fathers address as Killin so they were a long way from either place.

I have just received a birth certificate for July 1958 where the place of birth simply states "Maternity Home, Stirling".

Would this have been Airthrey castle or somewhere else?

Reply 5 makes it clear that Brian was granted a divorce on the grounds of his wife’s desertion  and she did not contest the divorce
thanks that's how I read it but that is the exact opposite of the story told in the family - just needed it confirmed that I read it correct!

There is in FindMyPast an item headed "Preston Decrees" in the Lancashire Evening Post issue of 21st October 1954 which reports that:

"At Preston Divorce Court, today Mr Commissioner Maddocks granted a decree nisi, in [an] undefended case, to Brian Robert Martin, Lowthorpe Road Preston, desertion by Mary Martin"

Also in FindMyPast is a detailed report, from the Nelson Leader of 10th October 1941 of their marriage on 4th October at St Mary's Church in Nelson.

Willyam

Thank you so much for this - the divorce is something I didn't have. My subs on FindMyPast doesn't give me access to newspapers. Can you tell me is there is any more details on the divorce? If there are I will go and access at the library or Lancs record Office. My friend believed her grandfather left her grandmother but this reads that Mary left Brian - am I reading that correct???

He should appear in online electoral registers probably until 2012. There is a possible match in Preston

I'm not sure where to look for the 2011 electoral role - where are you looking?

On Ancestry I can see a possible in 2003-4 in Great Harwood and then in Preston at 1 East Cliff in 2005-7.

Trying to trace Brian Robert Martin after 1946. Born 12 Feb 1917 in Blackburn.

In 1939 he was a policeman in Nelson. He married and then had a son but disappeared in c1946.

Waiting to hear back from LRO about his police records, website shows he served 1937-1946.

I can find a possible death in Preston in 2011 but the registration doesn’t give exact DOB.

Anyone any other ideas where to look?

Cheers Carole, I am almost positive that Mr McArthur died before Margaret and the person registering her death will have been her son - she came back into the family for a couple of years before she died and my father attendee her funeral. After her funeral all contact was lost again with her son.

Just a quick note...

"I have checked SP and Ancestry for her 3rd marriage but couldn’t see anything that seemed to match"

The only place to purchase them is through scotlandspeople.gov.uk at very reasonable cost.

Annie

Thanks Annie,I am aware of that and referred to Scotland’s people as SP.
