Thanks very much for that , it makes sense, James was a lock keeper I have just received  two of his sons baptism records they were both baptised in Overton Flintshire in 1838 although they were both born before 1838 but no date of birth on the baptisms, I knew James was a lock keeper, but not sure who he worked for.

I have no idea where James and Martha married, I have had no luck finding a marriage for them anywhere, but it would have been before registration began.  I will make a note of the church name is Shropshire and make further enquires.

Cheers

Hi,

I am trying to find out what church my ggg grandfather may have been baptised in in the Welshampton area 1793, I have found his baptism on the IGI but just says Welshampton, his name is James Cooper Clarke, and that is all I know about his baptism.  I have him in the 1841 and 51 census living in Old Crane Chester with his wife Martha (nee Roberts) and she was born in Overton Flintshire.

Any help most appreciated. (they would have been CofE)

Cheers

The marriage is on Lancs BMD site, you could order a copy of the cert to get more info.

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1917
Surname   Forename(s)   Surname   Forename(s)    Church / Register Office   Registers At   Reference
HAYES   Sarah E   HORNBY   Thomas   Prescot Register Office or Registrar Attended   Prescot   R/103/119

It sounds like it could have been a Catholic church wedding.

It is also on FreeBMD if you wanted to order a copy of the cert from the GRO Southport quoting year and quarter, vol and page numbers

Name:     Sarah E Hayes
Spouse Surname:    Hornby
Date of Registration:    Jul-Aug-Sep 1917
Registration district:    Prescot
Registration county (inferred):    Lancashire
Volume Number:    8b
Page Number:    1217

 :) :)

Hi Ian,

Not sure how it is pronounced, I don't know the area at all.

I think the parish registers for Whalley are at Lancashire Records Office in Bow Lane Preston.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/CBW/WRY/Whalley.html

Have you looked on the IGI on the familysearch website?  What first names and years are you looking for?

I had a look on there and there are  quite a lot of Hors(e)fall baptisms etc for Colne and Trawden.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

Bearing in mind that not everyone were baptised in the year they were born, it could have been years later when they were baptised.

What a fantastic story,

This would be an intersting article to post on the Bootle history website,  www.bootlehistory.co.uk

You never know if anyone on there might have known the Shorrock or Jergensen family.

I found the marriage on the anc site and Mildred was Mildred I Shorrock, and Harry was Harry V Jergensen.

Anglesey / Re: William Owen..Liverpool House builder

Hi,

I know this is an old post, but I have recently been able to purchase the book I have mentioned, The Welsh Builder on Merseyside - Annals and lives.

There are 4 William Owen listed in it, one has no year of birth etc, but built in various places in Liverpool including Beresford Road and Cockspur Street in the Dingle (Toxteth).  he came from Llansadwrn Anglesey, about 1846.

Another William Owen, Deane Road 1842-1915 native of Bontnewydd Caernarvon, came to Liverpool in 1865, built in Edge Lane District.

Another Manor Road Great Crosby, built Waterloo area.

And another with a very long write-up. Seaforth and Anglesey 1862-1931 Native of Burwen Anglesey came to Liverpool when he was 20.

This one lists various streets within the Liverpool and Crosby areas.

Hope that helps a bit.

I think your best bet would be old trade directories or electoral rolls as suggested.
