Tyrone / No First MInister for Northern Ireland at the moment
« on: Tuesday 15 January 19 12:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I recently sent a request to the PRONI Office regarding admission records to Middletown Convent, I knew I was under the 100yr rule for releasing documents, I have had them waived before when I requested my Grandma's Asylum records. I am 4yrs under the  100yrs.   The records have been found which is great but because we have no First Minister for Ireland and the Dept. Of Communities every request is on hold. This is what Proni replied to me. A search of relevant records held by PRONI has now been completed and I can confirm that we hold certain information in relation to your request.
However, I must inform you that although PRONI does hold the information which you requested, we will be unable to complete your request at the present time, in the absence of the ‘appropriate Northern Ireland Minister’, which is to say, the Minister for the Department for Communities

PRONI has been notified by the Information Commissioner’s Office that the Department for Communities does not have the authority to complete the necessary consultation process with the Responsible Authority for requests for transferred public records in the absence of a Minister, as required under section 15(5) and section 66(2) of the Freedom of Information Act. PRONI will therefore be temporarily suspending FOIA requests until a new Minister has been appointed.

Hope this will soon be rectified, I am so excited to finally have tracked some documents down which will explain more of my Mum's story.

Monaghan / Re: Sent to a convent in Monaghan, why?
« on: Sunday 13 January 19 22:43 GMT (UK)  »

Hi Neli, I can empathize with you. My grandparents lived in 1922 just over the border from Monaghan, my grandma suffered with melancholia after the birth of my mum in 1922 she tried to drown herself on several occasions and was admitted to Omagh Asylum. She had 2 boys already ages 4yrs and 6yrs old my grandad worked in the woollen mill and they lived in a very basic cottage at the end of a long lane and when I say basic I mean no proper facilities heating or water or plumbing. My mum was taken and put in Middletown St Louis Orphanage to be brought up by the nun,s I think by the priest but I have never got to the bottom of it because my grandads sister lived with them and other cousins close by. Why didn't they look after mum. She stayed there till she was abt 15yrs old.  On retrospect now I think my mum was better off in the orphanage she was educated by the nuns, she was looked after in healthier conditions, she was lucky that the nuns who looked after and taught her were really nice and cared for mum lovingly we went back to visit them on many occasions. I still would like to know what really happened and would love to see a photo of my mum when she was a young girl, I have no photo's of my grandma either . Good luck with your research and getting more answers. Anne

Thank you Regorian for continuing to look at this Hussar uniform I have looked at Bulgarian Romanian and Canadien Hussar uniform but the artists impressions are not very clear. On a lot of these images no  actual real soldiers in Hussar uniform when I google it. The Busby Plumes all appear quite long but the one on the photo is short in comparison. Thanks Anne

Hi Regorian, Sorry I misunderstood . Well I am glad its not fancy dress. These uniforms are very smart, Young Winston looked splendid in his uniform ( My Gt Grandad was Winstons press agent when he started his political career in Oldham) and Princess Louise certainly cut a dash in her uniform. This has got very intriguing the connection is on my husbands side and I have been saying for years that his Grandad had foreign blood but no one else could see it and have no knowledge of any overseas connections. I now need to delve more into my husbands family history and try and track some information on the photography studio.  Thank you once again Anne

T1 and Regorian, thank you for your very interesting and informative replies not what I was expecting to hear. so it could be a German Hussar uniform or even a fancy dress. There are so many foreign Hussar regiments with similar looking uniforms. Not sure about it being fancy dress but the Victorians seemed to dress up a lot  in costumes for photographs. I don't think I will ever get to the bottom of who this is, unfortunately. anne

Aww thank you Jim for explaining the terminology that is most helpful.  Hope you don't mind me veering off my query but I could have done with your help a few years ago my dad sent for his records before he died and his record confused him and  he was angry about omissions in his record about  a mission his anti tank battery was sent on .
