Thank you everyone for your help.
I think I've gone from knowing very little about Robert and his family to knowing quite a lot.
To summarise:
Robert Tubbs was born about 1772, based on his age at death. He may not have come from Norfolk at all but he was almost certainly from a coastal area (and probably from a seafaring family) and he became a seaman, probably at an early age.
1n 1799, aged about 27, he married Mary Chase in Great Yarmouth.
(Mary was born in Ormesby St Margaret in 1775, the daughter of Robert Chase and Jane Wacey)
By 1801 he had enlisted in the Royal Navy as a  quarter gunner on HMS Hindoostan.  His family were living in Caister next Yarmouth where 3 daughters were baptised, Mary and twins Jane and Elizabeth (who died soon after their birth.)
All the records except those of Caister name the family Tubbs, however, there were other families named Tubby in Caister so I imagine the parish clerk spelled Tubbs in the same way.
Robert moved ship in 1805 to HMS London then in 1809 to HMS Euralyus.  Therafter he was discharged as "unserviceable" (?) and died in Stoke Damerel, Plymouth in 1819.
By 1812, Robert's wife, Mary Chase and their daughter Mary Tubbs had moved to Plymouth, where a son, Robert Tubbs, was baptised in 1812.
Mary Tubbs the daughter married another sailor, John Dale (spelled Deal in the Plymouth records) in 1819, the year her father died.
The following year, the widowed Mary Tubbs married a shipwright Thomas Holbrook, but died 3 years later in 1823.

Oh no! I just wrote a very lengthy detailed reply, previewed it and lost it. Now my tea break is over.
Thank you everyone for some very useful suggestions which I will reply to in more detail.

FreeBMD has a death for Alfred Chase in 1847 in Bermondsey, possibly the same Alfred?

Ahh yes, I've found them on Ancestry-Robert was a warehouseman in 1851, it's certainly possible they are the same family.
And Sarah on her own with the children might be because Robert was at sea in 1841.
Alfred would have been born before they married unless the age is wrong which it often was in 1841.
Hmm-I wonder if it's them- why would they drop the name Tubbs?
Intruiging!

Thanks JJ that's certainly a possibilty, I can't find the record though, which year's census was it, 1851?
I've never been able to work out how to find the census records in the way you've given it, where should I look?

Norfolk / Another problem Robert Tubbs!
« on: Tuesday 06 August 19 16:37 BST (UK)  »
In January 1837 Robert Tubbs married Sarah Bond in St Nicholas Yarmouth. In February they baptised a son Robert Chase Tubs (sic), The father's name was also given as Robert Chase Tubs, a mariner. In 1840 Robert (described as a seaman this time) and Sarah baptised another son, Frederick Chase Tubbs.
Then they all disappear, no census records or death records for Sarah or Robert and I can only find birth records for their sons.
I'm sure Robert must be the son of Robert Tubbs and Mary Chase in my previous posting https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=816817.0 but I've got no evidence.

Does anyone have any ideas? If Robert was a mariner he was probably at sea during the census, but I can't find Sarah and their sons either.

Norfolk / Help please I would like to find out more about Robert Tubbs or Tubby
« on: Tuesday 06 August 19 16:05 BST (UK)  »
In 1799 Robert Tubbs married Mary Chase in St Nicholas, Yarmouth, both were single and "of this parish" though Mary was born in Ormesby St Margaret in 1775.  They had 3 daughters in Caister on Sea, Mary (my 3x grandmother) born 1801 and twins Jane and Elizabeth who were born and died in 1804.
The birth and death records for the girls give the surname as Tubby whereas the marriage is clearly Tubbs. (I thought it may be a transcription error but I have checked the original records on-line and it is clearly Tubby in Caister and Tubbs in Yarmouth).
I am certain I have the correct couple, Mary's surname, Chase is on the birth records.
Mary Tubbs/ Tubby married John Dale and went on to name two of her children Robert Chase Dale and Sarah Tubbs Dale.
I haven't been able to find any birth or death records for Robert Tubbs/Tubby or a death record for his wife Mary. (They are not the Robert and Mary Tubby buried in Hopton, I tried to claim them but they belong to another family!)
I wonder if anyone can find any records for Robert, I would like to know more about him. I did find a Yarmouth baptism in 1748 but that would make him  51 when he married.
All suggestions gratefully received!

Norfolk / Re: Elizabeth Dale born about 1835 Norfolk

A quick update on Elizabeth. She moved to Harwich with her parents and died in 1849 at the age of 14. She was buried in Harwich on 2nd October 1849.
I don't know why I kept on looking in Norfolk when her parents died in Harwich ???
I never did find a baptism record though.
Thank you to everyone who helped.
