Essex Lookup Requests / Re: 1871 census look up

Thanks very much for that - I've looked at the website you recommended and it certainly seems that Benjamin Cooper's father also served in the army as his birth was in the military listings.. I will let you know when I find any further information.  Regards, Jan

Thank you -that's definitely my family in the 1891 census and the rest of the details fit.
I know that someone in the family was in the army -the family story is that the name was Harvey-Cooper but only officers could have double barrelled names so the Harvey was dropped and used as a Christian name.
Also Harvey William called one of his daughters Flora -presumably after his sister. His eldest daughter was Emma Amelia( -but always called Amy) so I assume that was after his mother.
Is there any possibility of finding the family in earlier censuses -or of finding Emma's maiden name?
Thanks once again, Jan

I am trying to find out about my grandfather, Harvey William Cooper. I know he was born in Orsett , Essex in March 1867 and that his father was called Benjamin but that's all the information I have. I would like to find out about the family -his mother's name and his father's occupation as well as any siblings. Can anyone help -and is anyone looking for the same family? Jan

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Anthony Royal 1851
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 13:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello -I am another descendant of James John Royal -his daughter Hannah was my the mother of my grandmother. I am fascinated by the story of Antony Royal and his 2 names. How did you establish that both names belonged to the same person? It certainly makes tracing ancestors difficult when they do things like that! I believe sailors got a sum of money when they enlisted on a ship. Do you think our Antony enlisted twice and received double pay?
From the census information it seems that he was born in 1781 so I doubt if he is the Antony Royall born in Norwich in 1774- unless of course he was confused about his date and his place of birth, which is perfectly possible I suppose

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Charlotte Hodds 1841
« on: Tuesday 01 March 11 11:59 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry to join this conversation about 4 years late but I've only just started and I've discovered that Charlotte Hodds was my great-great grandmother. I think she was born in 1830 -whereas her mother Amy Hodds married Henry Julings in 1834. That would make Charlotte either illegitimate or Amy Hodds was a widow when she married Henry.Could Henry have given Charlotte his name on the 1841 census by mistake or just to simplify things? The ages of Amy and Henry are wrong or mis-transcribed by 10 years in the 41 census, as well -perhaps Henry wasn't very literate. It looks as though Amy spent the rest of her life with Charlotte and her husband -easier than being a charwoman I would think!

Norfolk / Re: Royal Family
« on: Tuesday 01 March 11 11:26 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandmother was Hannah Royal, born in Yarmouth in 1858 or 1859. She was the daughter of James John Royal of Yarmouth born 1827and later of Runham, and Charlotte Hodds, again from Yarmouth born 1830. Charlotte's mother was Amy Julings who married  Henry Julings in 1834. Charlotte was either illegitimate or Amy was a widow when she married Henry.
James and Charlotte Royal had a large family -as well as Hannah there were: Henry, Charlotte, Mary Ann, James J, Joseph, William, Edith, Catherine and Alice. These are listed on the censuses in 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891. There may be others not listed on these censuses because they were away from home.
Amy Julings lived with them during all these censuses -in 1891 she is listed as age 86, mother in law and widow --Henry Julings died in 1848.
I would be interested in any infomation anyone has about this family.
