London and Middlesex / Re: Mary Ann Hewitt Doubtfire
« on: Wednesday 29 February 12 10:52 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Dawn.

I did check the previous posts but didn't notice any that were relevant.

As a matter of interest, Daniel William Willmott and Mary Ann Hewitt Doubtfire had two children:  Jane Elizabeth born 12/Oct/1799 in Highgate and Lucretia Albertina born 1/Apr/1806 in Clerkenwell.  Lucretia Albertina died when she was only a few weeks old and Mary Ann died shortly after.

Jane Elizabeth married Sebastian Smith, a wealthy wine merchant.  He was the son of Christopher Smith, High Sheriff of London in 1807 and Lord Mayor of London in 1817.

Chris

Hi,

Many thanks for these very useful inputs.  I thought I was being quite bold saying he was untraceable in the census records!

I believe John Doubtfire may have died 1859, Bethnal Green, Mary Ann died 1892, also Bethnal Green.

I'm not confident of my ground regarding the relationship between John, Elizabeth and Robert but here's what I was thinking:

Elizabeth Doubtfire was born around 1816 in Shoreditch according to a couple of census returns.  She married Benjamin Yarrell on 8/Sept/1844 at St Dunstans & All Saints Stepney.  The marriage record indicates her father was John Doubtfire, pipe maker.  She subsequently died 1/Jun/1899 in Cheshunt, Herts.

Robert Doubtfire married Elizabeth Evans on 5/Jun/1854 at St John's Bethnal Green, aged 38.  He was residing at no. 8 Half Nicol's Street and his father was William Doubtfire, pipe maker.  Benjamin Yarrell was one of the witnesses at this marriage.

There's evidence that John Doubtfire and Mary Ann Foulser lived along Half Nicol's Street although not necessarily the same timeframe that Robert Doubtfire was living there.

From this I deduced (possibly wrongly, so I stand to be corrected) that John, Elizabeth and Robert were all related.  John and Elizabeth were most likely siblings, and cousins to Robert.

Regards,
Chris

London and Middlesex / Doubtfire family, tobacco clay pipemakers
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 18:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have seen a lot of material covering the Doubtfire clay pipemakers in London.  I believe the Museum of London has an exhibit of a clay pipe made by William Doubtfire (1650, Bishopsgate) dating back to the late 1600s.  I've seen a pedigree of a Henry Thomas Doubtfire , pipemaker (1785, Clerkenwell) which is tracable back to this William Doubtfire.

I have a John Doubtfire in my tree, birthyear or birthplace unknown who married a Mary Ann Foulser 0n 19/Aug/1848 at St Andrew Bethnal Green. This John Doubtfire was a bird stuffer according to his children's baptism records. He is not traceable in the census records. From his marriage record his father was John Doubtfire, a tobacco pipe maker.  As far as I can determine there is no direct connection between this John Doubtfire pipemaker and Henry Thomas Doubtfire but I assume he must belong to another branch of the London Doubtfire family which can be traced back to the early William Doubtfire pipemaker.

I have further established that my John Doubtfire junior had a sister called Elizabeth born around 1816 in Shoreditch. She married Benjamin Yarrell who was born around 1819 in Sandy, Bedfordshire. From this information I would suggest John junior was born in a similar timeframe, e.g. 1810-1820 in Shoreditch.

John Doubtfire junior and his sister Elizabeth seem to have had a cousin called Robert Doubtfire born around 1816 who was a carman. Robert married Elizabeth Evans in 1854 at St John Bethnal Green. On the marriage record Robert's father is shown to be William Doubtfire, a tobacco pipe maker.

Does anyone have any further information on this family?  Specifically, does anyone know how they were related to the other Doubtfire pipemakers?

Regards,
Chris

London and Middlesex / Mary Ann Hewitt Doubtfire

I would appreciate any information regarding this Doubtfire family:

I have a marriage record for a Mary Ann Hewitt Doubtfire who married Daniel William Willmott on 15/Sept/1798 at St James Clerkenwell. Mary Ann was a minor at the time of her marriage and got married by licence with the consent of her mother Mary.

I have seen a Pallot's marriage index for a William Doubtfire and a Mary Hewitt dated 1787 at St Martin in the Fields. There's a good possibility William and Mary were therefore Mary Ann's parents given the mother's surname. I'd imagine Mary Ann's birth would have been several years before her parent's marriage if this was the correct couple. Indeed IGI has a possible baptism entry for a Mary Ann Doubtfire born 4/Jul/1779, baptised 1/Aug/1779 at St George the Martyr Southwark, parents William & Mary Doubtfire.

Does anyone have any connections with this Doubtfire family?

Chris

Thanks Sue, that's very helpful.

IGI has a baptism record for John Reid, son of Richard Reid dated 14/Jan/1757 at Kirk Andrews Upon Esk which I think may be the correct one.  His cousins were also born in that part of Cumberland.  My only reservation is that he would have been 32 years old when he got his Freedom of the City admission papers.

I believe Richard Reid would have married a woman called Anderson but unfortunately I can't find a marriage record.

London and Middlesex / John Reid, distiller and spirit merchant of Aldersgate Street
« on: Sunday 26 February 12 19:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm researching John Reid, a distiller and spirit merchant who owned a distillery at 26 Aldersgate Street as well as a number of public houses across London.  He married Lucretia Willmott on 16/Aug/1788 at All Hallows Tottenham.  He acquired Holywell House in St Albans and he and Lucretia lived there until their deaths in 1836.  In 1804 he was the master of the Worshipful Company of Distillers.

He had two brothers, Thomas and William and two cousins, Ann Anderson who married John Wright in Kirk Andrews Upon Esk in Cumberland, and Jane Anderson who married Isaac Sowerby of Blencarn in Cumberland.

I would be grateful for any further information.

Chris

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Robert Reid 1841-71 census lookup please
« on: Friday 24 February 12 10:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've just stumbled across this thread and would be interested in getting some more information, particularly whether there was really a link between Robert Reid and the Reids of Barra.  I've traced back from Robert three generations and still seem to be stuck in Bermondsey.  I'd also like to confirm that Robert Reid had a brother James who was a draper who founded the 'Old England' chain of novelty drapery stores in France.  I believe here was another brother, Richard Reid who was a corn factor who lived at Oaklands in Beckenham.

Regards,
Chris
