Somerset / Re: Royal West of England Sanitorium Weston Super Mare

Aha!  The building was the West of England Sanitorium (no Royal!) and we've discussed this before:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=686372.0

I posted a link then, so here it is again:

This later became The Royal Hospital, and was situated at the southern end of the Promenade.
Now converted to flats and called Royal Sands.

Thank you very much for the links, lots of avenues to investigate

My great grandfather Henry May spent a month or so at the sanatorium around 1913.  Does anyone know if there are surviving records for that time.

I have a beret belonging to Private R Jensen. Details in previous post.  It was in the personal belongings of my late father Raymond Dodd.  I do not know how my father came to have it. My father served in the second world war in the D.E.M.S.  The only information I have found on line is that Private Jensen served in the Boer War. Is this correct ?  I would hope to return the beret to the legitimate family of Private Jensen.  Also can anyone help me piece together as to how the beret was in my fathers possession.

One of the servicemen wearing a beret which looks the same can be pictured on this web page.

The Canadian legion tell me they believe that Pte. Jensen was British, served in South Africa, immigrated to Glendale, California, after he got the Queens South Africa medal. There he joined the British Empire Service League Canadian Legion (Branch 40 ?, there are still branches of the RCL in the US) as he could not join the American Legion and the rules would allow him to join the BESL Canadian Legion. The Royal Canadian Legion  changed its name from the British Empire Service League Canadian Legion in 1958. Where your father got the beret nobody knows and nobody knows the family of Pte. Jensen. Unless Pte. Jensen was serving with the BESL Canadian Legion War Services during WWII and shipped on one of the ships your father was on.

Hi Ken
Thank you for replying. I do have two pictures of the beret, back and front.  I tried to attach them yesterday.  I will ask my husband to help me later today.  Do you know anything else about Private Jensen ?  It would be good if I could forward the beret to his family.  Will forward the pictures in due course.

I have a beret that was found with my late fathers private papers. I have no idea how my father came by it. My father served on DEMS during WW11. The details on the beret are British Empire Service League Canadian Legion Glendale Calif. Canadian legion 40.
On the inside of the beret is 20th Hussars 5 squad private R Jensen 4625.  Any help in finding out more would be appreciated.  I have contacted the Canadian  legion without success.  Research on line telols me he was awarded th Queens South Africa medal.
