Hi Milly

Catherine's parents were Thomas Wright and Elizabeth Jackson.

She put 'Widow' on her entry

I have attached a copy of the entry (the top left first entry) - I hope it comes out ok

Hello Liz

Robert was unable to sign the register and mrked it with a X
Catherine however was able to write her name fully in very confident calligraphy

I did think as you have ..................  but Frederick King did not come from the area and never lived in the county of her second marriage (unless Catherine told him about her first husband)

Hi Milly

I am looking at the entry in the original the Parish Record book - the records for Medway are all scanned and available for free on the council's website

Yes, could be, but surely Robert or Catherine would have noticed and had the Vicar change it.......  I don't think Robert would want his wife's first husband's on their marriage entry !!!!
 Thanks

Catherine Ann Wright, born 1856 Dagenham, Essex to Thomas Wright and Elizabeth Jackson

I have found her on the 1861 and 1871 census living with her parents and siblings

Between 1871 - 1885 she had 4 children by Frederick King (I cannot find their marriage).  1 was born in Dagenham and 3 in Halling in Kent.  The children had the surname of King. Frederick died in 1885

Catherine remained in Halling area and between 1886 - 1892 she had 4 children by Robert Brown.  These children all the surname of Brown-King as Catherine and Robert were not married until 1893.

After the marriage between Catherine and Robert Brown, she had a further 3 children with the surname of Brown

All of the above makes sense to me BUT....................

Why did Catherine put on her marriage entry to Robert Brown on 11 February1893 at the Parish Church in Snodland, Kent  that her Father was called Frederick King .............  when this was in fact her first deceased husband !! She knew her parents.  Surely Robert would not have liked this entry !!!

Any ideas please ???

I wondered if anyone could help me ?

George Attryde was born in 1853 in Kingston Workhouse, Surrey.

He joined thee 80th Foot 2nd South Staffordshire Regt in Aldershot, Surrey on 18.4.1872. His record describes him as 5'5", fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.

The records also reads George EVE alias ATTRYDE.  I have no idea who EVE was !!

I understand that he served in :-
Hong Kong (1872 - 1876)
South Africa (Pietermaritzburg (1877 - 1879) where he married Mary Yeatmen on 15.11.1877
Ireland (1881) where he had 2 children with his wife Mary name spelled ATTRIDE (not Attryde)

He progressed to Colour Sergeant and was in charge of payrole/dealing with the regiment's finances

The good news then ends.

It appears that he then deserted in May 1884 after 12 years in Army and went to New York where he spent the rest of his life and the family line continued as ATTRIDE

If there is anyone who could look-up in the Police Gazette around May 1884 to see if there is any further information it may tell why he left in such a hurry or indeed his alias name for which I really have no explanation ?

I would appreciate your help
Thanks Bekki
