Technical Help / Re: Vodafone 3G switch off
« on: Sunday 28 January 24 16:36 GMT (UK)  »
I think you meant to type "LTE/3G/2G".

LTE is one form of 4G. It stands for "Long Term Evolution". There are various other flavours, but all brands of network should support LTE.

If a connection can't be made to LTE, the phone will try 3G, and then 2G.

Surprisingly, 2G will still be around when 3G is killed off. There are some essential services which rely on it.

Kincardineshire / Re: sea pie
« on: Saturday 06 January 24 18:43 GMT (UK)  »
We have a Sea Pie in our family too. It is not one of the fancy ones with six layers of different meats, but a slow-cooked dish appropriate for a family where everyone worked.

The main ingredients are dried peas (soaked) and minced beef, with a suet crust.

I've written the recipe down, and you can see it at:

Technical Help / Re: Mcafee anti virus
« on: Thursday 28 December 23 13:53 GMT (UK)  »
The Registry is a database containing many thousands of settings used by Windows and applications. Windows 95 was the first time consumers saw its use.

There are MANY products which claim that tidying up old or "broken" registry entries is a Good Thing, and will speed up your computer.

They are lying.

They don't know which registry entries are needed by which programs, so may do more harm than good.

Removing those entries which are ACTUALLY unused will speed up your computer in the same way as throwing away the cardboard box in the far corner of your attic will speed up your journey from your front door to your kitchen.

So don't waste time on these things, and certainly don't waste your money.

Incidentally, the various files which comprise the Registry are known as "Hives", just to annoy someone in the development team who had a fear of bees. :o

Big success this year is not on my tree but for someone I've been helping at the FHS.

They have a "gateway ancestor", leading to gentry in Cheshire. People who were knighted for fighting in battles!

The Common Room / Re: surname malin

Is Malin Head, the northernmost tip of Ireland, named after someone with the surname, or is it an anglicisation of something Gaelic?
