« on: Monday 27 February 12 18:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

A lady from Bristol [Helen “hg” RE: image; on the Armed Forces thread] has published a photo of a man, in a uniform, on TS, which I think your Military Experts would know more about. Afraid It’s out of my league.

World War One / COMPLETED - WWI, Daily Chronicle clipping ?
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 02:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

Dear Moderator, if you have a better forum - please shift.

The attached clipping is in a NZ Soldier's diary, and notations imply that the copy headed, DESERTED TRENCHES, is from the Daily Chronicle 29/7/18. The comments being attributed to a Canadian Officer, Philip GIBBS.

The paper is not a New Zealand press that I'm familiar with. so I presume it is the UK one. I've been unable to find on line access to that edition and am seeking suggestions as to how I might go about sighting [or getting a sighting] and confirming same, in support of the notations. By implication there is possibly other associated copy naming Philip GIBBS. Suggestions would be welcomed.

Technical Help / Talking Scot, access problems.
« on: Thursday 09 February 12 18:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

As one who likes to browse the Genealogical Forums, looking for tips to assist my research, I’ve come across this post which advises that the Talking Scot forum is experiencing access problems. Below is the temporary way around the problem as advised by their techno administrator, and senior members’. For outsiders, access to the site's forum, you should Google "FAQ Talking Scot" the problem being getting from the site HOME page to it's FORUM.

As mentioned in some of the posts above, as a workaround while the 'fatal error' problem is still with us, you should be able to access the forum via the FAQ page. It is worth bookmarking that address.

All the best,

Australia / Before it's time. W. L. BOYCE, NSW 1910/13
« on: Thursday 26 January 12 18:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

My heritage research leaves me interested in making contact with family of William Livingstone BOYCE, farmer of Eulabil [Casino] NSW.

His 1910/13 ECHELON STALLS being before their time. A forward thinker, that technology took a while to catch up to.

Hello.

The surname supplied by the census transcriber, drew a complete blank when I looked up the Kirkcaldy OPR births, on Family Search - c114428.

Any suggestions for a surname ?  Some one looking at it cold, may not be blinded by supporting material / clues, that this researcher believes he can see.

Scotland / Publishing details for Atlas/Map req.
« on: Tuesday 06 December 11 10:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

I would be grateful if some one with experience of the Atlases of Scotland would give me the Title and Publisher for the Atlas containing County and Parish details in Scotland, that this clipping has been copied from.

A very helpful Family History Centre Librarian photo copied several Country/Parish pages for me some 30 years ago. Such details are not on the bottom of any of the pages I received, so all these years I’ve been unable to give credit for same. In more recent years I re-contacted that Library in an effort to find the source publication, without success. More recently I’ve been looking on line, and though I found similar atlas / map pages I’ve not been able to find the correct one.

Scotland Resources / Link: Scottish Mining Websites
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 09:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there.

It appears that manners are a dying art. Yet another web site (http://www.scottishmining.co.uk). is considering withdrawing it’s public contact access, with offers of assistance, because the privilege being voluntarily offered, has been abused by the enquiring public, not familiar with archival practices, and protocols.

Original copy, ceases to be ORIGINAL COPY, if archivists are expected to “correct” what appears to be errors.

If your research finds what can conclusively be proven to be in error, don’t shoot the messenger, but publish your findings with suitable attachments / notations in support of your claim. Above all else, the volunteer is not showing disrespect, by not altering their original copy, or original transcripts.

Volunteers are a valuable research resource, with in depth knowledge about their archive holdings, and should not be subject to abuse, because of the detail contained in any resource they locate for the inquirer.

Edit: Spelling correction.

New Zealand Resources & Offers / Papers Past - research tips.
« on: Tuesday 22 November 11 19:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there.

I’ve been commended by KIWI GIRL, for the method I used to find more PapersPast references, to a body found hanging in a tree. With hind site it was a very quick and simple search.

The original post:-

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,566449.0.html

I had learnt from previous research, that the common denominator was the local policeman, who was reported as attending the incident. In all probability he would be named in all subsequent actions, re the courts etc. Therefore I searched using the policeman’s name.

#1.  KIWI GIRL’S find;-

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=PBH19091120.2.33&cl=CL2.1909.11.20&e=-------100--1-byDA---0Hanging+unidentified+man--

Kiwi Girl had assumed that any inquest would have been quite some time after the finding of the body. Therefore would have been tempted to have searched too far back in time. She had not found an account, of the original reporting to the Police.

#2. FRESH FIELD search find:-

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=EP19091112.2.61&srpos=24&e=--1905---1910--100--1-byDA---2Constable+Torr--

In this example, take a look at the common denominators [research tools] when both reportings are compared.

SUBJECT:  Death / body/hanging   #1. & #2.
PLACE NAMES: Nuhaka, Waikokopu, [Masterton]  #1.
      Wairoa, Opoutama, Mahia District.  #2.
NAMED PERSONS:  Turo/Toro NEPIA, P HAMIL  #1
NAMED POLICE:  Constable TORR.  #1 & #2.
DATE: 20/11/1909  #1.  12/11/1909 #2.
PUBLICATION: Poverty Bay Herald.  #1.  Evening Post. #2.

I hope this tip is helpful to others.
