Well that has sent me thinking. Why did the children not stay with the father, or was that common in those days for children to be put in children's home etc? I believe it is the same Joseph Mann as china hawker was always his profession. Thank  you so much for the help you have given me in such a short time.

hi there,
information I have is Married 8th December 1879 in Bethnal green to Catherine Gilbert. Her father Bob Gilbert , occupation Engineer. Joseph Mann aged 38, condition Widower, occupation Glass & china dealer, his father Joseph Mann - Labourer. They have a child born May 1879. All the children in later census have Catherine as their mother.
I think Mary could be first wife?

I am having difficulty tracing Joseph Mann born Luton probably 1835 ish. his age varies a lot in later census. He is a widower when he marries my great grandmother. His father is also Joseph Mann. Anyone have any ideas?

hello,
yes I realize Davies is a "Smith"type of name. I have just sent for a birth 1868 certificate hoping it's him. I couldn't find him on 1871 census though. I am hopeful he is the same one on the farm in 1881. Thanks for quick reply.
