England / Keates Brick Wall
« on: Tuesday 04 October 11 21:51 BST (UK)  »
Apologies if this posted in the wrong place, but it seemed the most logical to me as it doesn't seem to fit anywhere else.

I am sure that most people doing family research will at some stage hit a brickwall, I have several but on all bar one I have still have avenues to explore before giving up or asking for help.

On this one I would appreciate the thoughts & ideas of the community.

On 6th June 1849 Philip Benjamin Scott married Eliza Keats at St Johns in Manchester. Her age is shown as 'full' and her father as James Keats Wine Merchant.

Witnesses William Henry Bateman & Sarah Pagu**. Neither name mean anything to me or fit the tree.

1841 Census - Philip is living in Stepney

1851 Census - Philip is living in Rickergate, Cumberland and shows as 'unmarried?'
Eliza Scott is living in Lambeth, birth date abt 1812 born in London with children George Scott aged 7 and Kate Scott aged 4

1861 census - Eliza is living in St Helier, birth date abt 1815 England, with George J aged 17, Kate E aged 14 and Walter aged 8.
I have not found a record for Philip.

1871 census - Kate is living with her aunt in Jersey
Eliza, now born c1819 Exeter, Philip and Walter now aged 18 are living in Cardiff.

Eliza died in Oct-Dec 1878 in Cardiff, shows birth c1819

The children

George John Scott died on 26th June 1861 by drowning at St Quen's Bay, Jersey. He was bathing with some friends and was unable to get back to the shore against the current. The inquest shows that he shouted to his friends and they managed to get to safety. Sadly George did not & his body was found 3 days later. His death certificate gives his age as 16 years and 8 months. So born in September, October or November 1844. His age, as above, was also given at the inquest along with him being born in London.

Katherine Eliza born 20th May 1846 at Highgate, Kendal. Mother Eliza Scott formerly Keates. So 3 months years before their marriage at Manchester.

Walter born 18th Sept 1852 in Burlington Place, Carlisle. Mother Eliza Scott formerly Keath.

The problem

I cannot locate a George John Scott or Keates born in London at this time.
I cannot find Eliza in 1841.
Philip  has at least 8 vicars as father, grandfather, uncles, great uncles & cousins. I know that he could have had children outside of wedlock, but it does seem to make it less likely.

My theories

That Philip & Eliza married outside the UK first
That George was from Eliza's first marriage or was illegitimate

Finally, fyi Eliza is my great great grandmother

All thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc appreciated.

Have you seen the entries on http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/Search.pl  ?
They are not complete, some on IGI are missing from there. They have some burials too. The soundex is pretty good on there.
Did Bridget Wayet's father marry twice? Is John from the first marriage?

Yes I have, IGI & FreeReg compliment each other as they tend to leave out different ones !

I think that John may be from the first marriage, hoping to prove this on my next visit to the Lincoln Achives.

Ok, here we go  :)

Elizabeth 1706-? married Benjamin Cooke 1712-1743, memorial at Westminster Abbey to E & B plus 7-10? children, unlikely that she re-married. Mentioned in LB's will along with daughter Philippa

Sarah 1708, no other information

Mary 1711, no other information

Ann 1713-177 married John Scott 1701-1777

Margaret 1714-1749 married Lewis Griffin 1713-1761

I would not be surprised if there is one more daughter but it is probably Sarah or Mary that I am hunting the marriage for.

plus Bridget 1718-1786

Off to the Boston archives 30th April 'gap'hunting

For whatever reason, I cannot get wildcards to work on IGI. Is there an idiot guide to this? Hints gratefully accepted.

George Myers/Ann Waite marriage is most unlikely. There is a daughter Ann but she married my 5xggfather.  The date is probably 25+ years to late as well.

I have no knowledge of the 'daughter of William Kent'.

fyi, the only 2 records that I can find relating to the surname Marmes in the mid/late 1700's are in the Ardeche, France.

The name pops up in the USA  much later.

Aarrgghh, where do I go from here?

I am not convinced that the first letter is M. I think he uses the same sort of beginning for other letters such as B in "...to my Brother George Brown..." and also R in "Ring" in the fifth line up - that does say ring doesn't it? Anyhow, is it possible that it is another letter which begins with a vertical line?

Yes it does say ring

Tks everyone & I'll try to add some more (perhaps) relevant information.

Capability married Bridget Wayet, 1 of 6 daughters all baptised in Boston, Lincolnshire. I have 2 without marriages and neither of these link to a possible George ? candidate.

The initial M is identical to the M in month (5 lines above) and also as in Mr (John Wayet) 4 lines above. I could of course be wrong.

The Q shaped twiddly bit appears on quite a few letters, the only consistent theme is that they all seem to be capitalised words in the middle of sentences.

I cannot find any candidates on IGI for marriages or baptism under George Marmes, Marnes but it could be that they are a rare breed in one of the untranscribed parishes.

I also went through Marines and Marnies but couldn't find a marriage to a Wayet / Waite.

I'll have another look tonight and hope that a g&t will open the mind

Edward

What really doesn't help is that 3 of the 4 daughters I have tracked down didn't get married in Boston (despite it being their home town), so Boston PR hunting may well not help here either.

I cannot work out the surname, first word, last line of page 4 of his will & would really appreciate any thoughts and/or assistance.

It looks like (to me)

M as in month a few lines above
A - quite clear
R - again quite clear
Then 1 or 2 letters that I cannot decide on
E - again quite clear
S - again quite clear

The missing bit may be an M, but Marmes is a very unusual surname and I am struggling to find anyone around in the 1700/1800's with this name.

All help / ideas / inspiration gratefully received

tks in advance
